SELECTED READERS' COMMENTS:
* AMISHREBEL :...everything operates in cycles, I suppose

* MATTGAYMON : But what was 19103 like in 1998?

* THEHONJUDGESMAILS @AmishRebel: Yeah, this sounds like my past couple of weekends.
Also: SPACEHOG!?!?! Awesome.

* DWAYNE PROVECHO Dear Earl,
Was the Mooney Suzuki show at Coney Island High the one where they opened for thee Headcoats and thee Headcoatees? Because I was at that one, but I can't remember the exact date. One of the best shows I've ever been to, and certainly one of my top 3 in NYC.

*JMACNY : angular banjos sound good to me...

* FIVEINCHTAINT : @TheHonJudgeSmails: Dude writes one catchy tune and lands Liv Tyler. That song wasn't that great, was it?

* THEOLOGICALSONG : well done, EG. your use of well documented intricate detail, presented in a bare bones reportorial style, becomes strangely, almost maudlin-ly poetic as it accumulates. not at all to dismiss the more generalized amusingly sardonic dialogues of The storied Past, but this approach somehow arrives with more emotional force for me. without getting too insular here, I suspect we have many friends in common, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we know each other. fruit for another conversation. for now, thanks for bringing it back. I s'pose my only caveat is: a fairly narrow swath of your demimonde, as represented here. a more expansive window might be nice. but I imagine this was an accurate depiction of the netherworld you were inhabiting at the time.

* FLOSSY : Drum & Bass? Psy-Trance? Brit-Pop? This makes me glad I was only 12.

* CHEAP SHOT @yourfriendandneighbor:
Then: no table service, smoking allowed rampant drug use.
Now: table service, no smoking, not so rampant drug use.
I prefer the former.

* MICKEYITALIANO : Not to knock 'the Earl', but anyone with a synapse left of pre and post NYC nightlife highs and lows may agree to the late 80's early 90's, being on par with the days of Max's and early CB's.

* THEHONJUDGESMAILS @fiveinchtaint: Perhaps fittingly, neither is Liv Tyler, anymore.

* KOALA325 Sadly, Patch Adams is the only thing I remember about 1998.

* SALLY TOMATO Duu-huuude. Are you rockin' the Philly zip? Is that what that signoff is? Because if you are, I am so loving you. Also, love that you're listening to Aja. I guess I'm not the only Steely Dan-loving Philadelphia native on the premises.

* SEEINGI What, no Squeezebox?

* JMACNY : @Sally Tomato: I'm on the top of that list, brave as I may be to admit it. (not Philly, I'm in NYC)....Steely Dan were pretty snarky, hidden by the lounge jazz sounds.....smart guys.

* MONKEY_BUTTER What! Where's Mother and Jackie 60, boy you people have total flea memory. What you do think inspired most of what is above here.

* THEHONJUDGESMAILS @JMacNY: @Sally Tomato: Steely Dan ruled.

* FLIPPER BABY My reminiscence of February 1998: Enjoyed Okocim at the Olde Homestead Inn, avoided everything the Earl mentioned.

* HYPATIA Oh man. I was such a little retard, but I wish I'd saved my flyers. I was at at least two of those events (Grooverider/Frost/DB/Dara and Suzuki).

* THIGHHIGH @yourfriendandneighbor:
As my mother used to say when I complained of having nothing to do: There are no boring days, only boring people.Same with cities.

* FROMTHEFUTURE OMG! Tiswas! How could I forget! Sigh. Thank you.

* SUPERBIEN @MattGaymon: Kinda "meh", but on the cusp of blossoming into the bougie decadence that it is now. Rittenhouse Square is a lovely park . . .

* UNRED AT 03:19 PM
The Upper Crust and Coney Island High! And not knowing if you were going to be assaulted on St. Marks Place. Such good memories.

* YOURFRIENDANDNEIGHBOR AT 03:32 PM
@ThighHigh: Did your mother say that 10 years ago when everything was cooler?

* KLL5 But what about Baktun? When 14th street between 9th and 10th had the Cooler, Baktun, Mother, the Belgian place, the 24 hour and the deli. And that was about it for blocks!
Also, these were the last sputtering days of raves in burnt out clubs in Times Square.

* SNAPPALOOSA I was at that Spacehog show. A friend invited me to come along after I got stood up ("aw, shit, babe-- got called in to work! Can't get out of it") by my schmuck of a boyfriend.
Wouldn't ya know it, but there, in the back of the room, sucking face with a girl who was decidedly NOT me, was that schmuck of a boyfriend. "Working," I guess?
Oh well. At least it was a good show. That said, the best thing I ever saw at Wesbeth was Crash Worship in 1994...
