january 11 1994 there was a snowstorm in nyc. its about 10 degrees this week, 2nd week of jan 2009
jan 12, 1994 I went to maxwell's in hoboken nj to see lloyd cole solo acoustic . here are some highlights of the set: perfect skin. unhappy song. charlotte st. waterloo sunset. Im not like everybody else. lola!! [3 kinks covers!]. jennifer she said. so youd like to change the world. brand new friend. my bag. 2cv. undressed. down on mission st. forest fire. mr. wrong. seen the future. perfect blue. I have read these were LCs 1st solo gigs ever! 15 years ago hes benn solo since about 2000 live and his albums are too !

jan. 29, 1994 i went to nell's [now Plumm on w. 14th] with actress/dancer adelita laura bonnici, guests hip hop legend & pioneer LL Cool J, who was dancing a lot, hanging out casually & enjoying the excellent R&B, funk & hip hop tunes in the basement. dj hi-lites on the night downstairs incl. taana gardner's heartbeat, tupac I get around, the shoop shoop song, marshall jefferson's house music anthem, & gap band outstanding. Nell's which opened in autumn 1986 was one of NYC's top clubs of the 80s & 90s, with an inspiring mixed crowd from fashion & art beautiful people to the wealthiest socialites & euros to the most savvy club kids & homegirls. Im not aware of any club in nyc in the 21st century that has anywhere near the elegance & vibey, mixed crowd that Nell's had in the 80s. I would say that the last club that came close was the Tunnel in its heyday circa 1987-1995. if youre looking for a fun-filled, a little bit of everything Studio-style crowd in nyc in 2007 I think youll be disappointed. In that way the glory years of studio, area, nell's, tunnel, mudd club & danceteria are indisputably superior to anything going on in nyc clublife in 2009. somebody text peter gatien asap.

some of my fave tv shows in jan 1994 incl AAA & emll wrestling on galavision, [incl ultimo dragon vs negro casas!]. in japan, big van vader vs nobuhiko takada. and on wtbs wcw with ric flair & sting vs. vader & rick rude. NFL football, melrose place, repeats of david lettermans nbc late night show on E! TV, & the banana splits. 15 years later it's all about CNN news + NFL on ESPN CBS & FOX .
on public access tv, grandma's homemade cheese, jake's squirt tv, and my own weather report show were written about in TimeOut New York, NY Press, & the Village Voice in 1994. I had a cable TV show from 1983 - 2007 . I am looking forward to a new "Weather Report" show on Comcast cable

I took a pic with denmark's may anderson . best songsx: suede "together." and echo "the cutter."

BEST FASHION EDITS IN US MAGAZINES JULY - DEC 2008:

W july 2008 lara stone. daria. kate moss by weber in miami. a few times a year, when bruce weber does 'his thing' in W all the way [like kate detroit, and even her new orleans edit] they are arguably the best photo-essays in an american magazine. the model[s]. the styling. the landscape. the "story" told. basically weber's done it again here. as far as an american magazine, its hard to find 3 model performances as good as these in 2008. lara might be the focus, and her body has never looked this good. and as 'iffy' as kate might be in certain 07-08 edits, shes superb [as usual] in weber's hands. and you know what, daria is my favourite of the 3 here. page 97 alone is one of the best mag pages of 2008 from any source. alex white's effortless but brill styling. weber's compositions from individual to off-hand groups. oh sasha is here too, another crush of mine. yoo-hoo gareth pugh. the sumptuous boobs of all 3 girls. and my crush on daria again. lara & a bunny rabbit. the miami sun. who could love you better like this? 11+ of 10.

VOGUE JUNE 2008 : daria & pierce brosnan by Testino. now THIS is great!!! THEME OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA hITCHCOCK IS SO GREAT, and totally realized with props like the Mercedes, church & Golden Gate. Im a huge Daria fan & her retro perfection here is really something. Pierce is a bit wooden but he's handsome in that Cary Grant-ish way Just superb styling by Grace as usual everything looks awesome ralph, lanvin, prada, marc, thakoon, balen, D&G. this edit is awesome in a thematic way that too few us vogue edits are. LOVE the hitchcock theme, settings & daria !! 9 of 10. Testino's pics all the way there.

trentini, cat mcneil , stam & linchuk [?] in bridgehampton by klein. gotta love this. great swim bodies espec cat & trini. kleins pool is always fun, balloon animals etc. also subtle kinky subtext: lesbians, woman's world, future sex , all that. really hot for usually staid us vogue. 9 of 10

guinevere by roversi. real surprise in ish. guin is GREAT swim girl. roversi you know how great he is. and here too. guin looks amazing shes still got it, more than turly or gissy as seen here. stunning modelling so sexy. alex white chose AMAZING swim pieces. outrageous edit that steals the mag. 9 of 10 one of best of 2008

amber by klein. I think meisel usually shoots amber in 21st century for us vogue but klein actually did amazing here. sure amber is pretty air-brushed last 5+ years but more often than not she still has it, especially here. tonne goodman's styling is so brill, this deserves 1st edit, has look of london 1965 + eggleston's memphis 1969. its just so brill, its like that testino/daria/hitchcock thing, makes me wonder why US vogue cant always be this good. klein is so inconsistent in us vogue but hes top class here. love the way the photo-tones are processed. and amber & especially tonne's styling are awesome. remarkable. 9 of 10.
#6:BAZAAR June 2008. agnete hegelund + anabela belikava by tom munro. Open up the june HB & when you see agnete & anabela on the first 2 edit pages, right there you know HB is better than us vogue in summer 2008. I loved both of these girls at first look, anabela's had star edits in HB since late 2007. agnete has been hot in the biz for about a year I guess but shes new, I think, to HB & W too? anyway this is a studio fall edit styled by brana wolf and it rocks top to bottom. 13 page edit brana really scores with the fall looks, hi-lites incl: armani, prada, gucci, chanel, ralph, ck, bottega, balen, ysl, LV, kors, D&G, ricci. I cant even choose betw the two girls I mean maybe anabela is more seasoned and maybe agnete is slightly more beautiful? dont want to choose. munro's studio pics are strong its basic but it communicated harder with the refined palette & makeup than many vogue studios. just a wonderful shoot girls clothes, mood. killer intro edit to june. 8.8 of 10.

W JULY 2008: karlie kloss & viktoriya by david slijper. when W gives us front of book edits they usually rock and this one is even harder than usual. I cant believe how good karlie is looking now I thought she was an ED 13 year old when she debuted. this viktoriya is a classy russian/east euro looking blonde - can u believe how many babes that region has turned out the last 5 years? its like the rest of the world cant even compete with a few east bloc countries. shes a little hard almost a jacquetta angular [with valentina genes] but karlie balances her with the "16 magazine" teen spirit. the styling here by marcus teo is actually amazing its like he's channeling grace c or tonne g I swear & I dont even know who marcus is! mcqueen, givenchy. ysl. bottega. D&G [love the menswear on karlie WOW!]. kors . gio. this is a front-book edit that is better than your better bazaar or us vogue lead edits!! the girls, the pics, the styling, its a Major WOWW!! 8+ of 10. VOGUE JUNE 2008 : trentini by demarchelier in Patagonia. trini & patrick work together so well. trini is superb here, big crush on her. patrick comes through with the wide-screen pics, theyre quite good but not genius. phyllis' styling gets the job done but the towel pic [of course] wins the day. high marks for trini. 7.5 of 10 for her.
VOGUE JULY 2008:
daria & raquel by david sims. its so great to see daria regularly in US Vogue, credit to anna for that. raquel has been so great for like 5 years now wow she's a true MVP. love the way daria's body looks here, Im so into arms hers are beautiful and her legs too. make up makes both look a touch odd/alien but not that bad. sims takes a lot of stick for his 'jumping' vogue edits - mcdean had some, really us vogues been doing dopey 'jumping' a lot the last few years - but Im not complaining here I think the girls are good actually. and grace's clothes as usual are excellent, shes vogue's editing MVP. looks i like espec incl prouenza, balen [wow!!!], prada, DK [daria's arms!], ysl, rodarte [brill styling!], lanvin, and chanel. killer styling. really hot 1st edit, give it to daria, grace & sims too. 7.6 of 10.
W AUGUST 2008:
doha qatar islamic museum by j teller. another brill travel piece by teller [remember his DC lily cole? best shes ever been?]. anyway variety of doha/museum scenes. good portraits. big car at the water front6 is best. supermarket too. teller is so so great. 7.9 of 10

gisele my mert/marcus. technicaly the pics are great. future effects. colours. alex whites styling is exciting but also a bit 'kitchen sink'? gisele has a bit of her "Im dumb" character here; yet also a super-human body & shes sexy... just dont love her performance say vs turly in edit #1?? but no arguing with her tit on 191 and espec her cultivated ass on 205. just shopot her bare ass all day & youll get a famous edit. 7.6 of 10, nice pics
BAZAAR JULY 2008:
rhoda by kadel. rhoda is blonde & it works. her work is actually at a very high level since 2007. kadel also shot great here & mossman's styling is the best in the ish so far. 16 pg edit this at least can compare with a strong, classic HB story that you'd see in last 10-20 years. 7.9 of 10 really rhoda & kadel impressed.
VOGUE AUGUST 2008:
kate moss by testino + retrospective. new kate pics by testino are great, just like amber by klein "Chelsea girl" not the warhol, the London 65 CG. retro pics show that Kate is greatest model ever. anna brings kate back to vogue cover, but with subtle "Age" dig. fuuck anna, kate's the greatest & shes 100000X cooler than anna. great work by kate, testino & grace. 7.9 for retro feature, cover & new pics.
VOGUE SEPT 2008:
keira by testino. some people call keira too thin but I like her, even in bikinis. theme here is art galleries in Berlin. even if its slightly jarring contrast to grace's typically forward styling, its exciting. & keira really isnt exerting much 'modelling' energy, but the clothes & the pics are so good, it really works. maybe not a home run lead edit for seopt, but its quite good. cover is more typical us vogue of last 10 years, concervative, but adequate. I would have preferred to see sexy keira bikinis like say a charlize but for an actress cover story, mario & grace def pull it off. 7.7 of 10

I think meisel usually shoots amber in 21st century for us vogue but klein actually did amazing here. sure amber is pretty air-brushed last 5+ years but more often than not she still has it, especially here. tonne goodman's styling is so brill, this deserves 1st edit, has look of london 1965 + eggleston's memphis 1969. its just so brill, its like that testino/daria/hitchcock thing, makes me wonder why US vogue cant always be this good. klein is so inconsistent in us vogue but hes top class here. love the way the photo-tones are processed. and amber & especially tonne's styling are awesome. remarkable. 9 of 10.

Open up the june HB & when you see agnete & anabela on the first 2 edit pages, right there you know HB is better than us vogue in summer 2008. I loved both of these girls at first look, anabela's had star edits in HB since late 2007. agnete has been hot in the biz for about a year I guess but shes new, I think, to HB & W too? anyway this is a studio fall edit styled by brana wolf and it rocks top to bottom. 13 page edit brana really scores with the fall looks, hi-lites incl: armani, prada, gucci, chanel, ralph, ck, bottega, balen, ysl, LV, kors, D&G, ricci. I cant even choose betw the two girls I mean maybe anabela is more seasoned and maybe agnete is slightly more beautiful? dont want to choose. munro's studio pics are strong its basic but it communicated harder with the refined palette & makeup than many vogue studios. just a wonderful shoot girls clothes, mood. killer intro edit to june. 8.8 of 10.

W JULY 2008: karlie kloss & viktoriya by david slijper. when W gives us front of book edits they usually rock and this one is even harder than usual. I cant believe how good karlie is looking now I thought she was an ED 13 year old when she debuted. this viktoriya is a classy russian/east euro looking blonde - can u believe how many babes that region has turned out the last 5 years? its like the rest of the world cant even compete with a few east bloc countries. shes a little hard almost a jacquetta angular [with valentina genes] but karlie balances her with the "16 magazine" teen spirit. the styling here by marcus teo is actually amazing its like he's channeling grace c or tonne g I swear & I dont even know who marcus is! mcqueen, givenchy. ysl. bottega. daria & raquel by david sims. its so great to see daria regularly in US Vogue, credit to anna for that. raquel has been so great for like 5 years now wow she's a true MVP. love the way daria's body looks here, Im so into arms hers are beautiful and her legs too. make up makes both look a touch odd/alien but not that bad. sims takes a lot of stick for his 'jumping' vogue edits - mcdean had some, really us vogues been doing dopey 'jumping' a lot the last few years - but Im not complaining here I think the girls are good actually. and grace's clothes as usual are excellent, shes vogue's editing MVP. looks i like espec incl prouenza, balen [wow!!!], prada, DK [daria's arms!], ysl, rodarte [brill styling!], lanvin, and chanel. killer styling. really hot 1st edit, give it to daria, grace & sims too. 7.6 of 10.

keira by testino. some people call keira too thin but I like her, even in bikinis. theme here is art galleries in Berlin. even if its slightly jarring contrast to grace's typically forward styling, its exciting. & keira really isnt exerting much 'modelling' energy, but the clothes & the pics are so good, it really works. maybe not a home run lead edit for seopt, but its quite good. cover is more typical us vogue of last 10 years, concervative, but adequate. I would have preferred to see sexy keira bikinis like say a charlize but for an actress cover story, mario & grace def pull it off. 7.7 of 10

Keri russell from felicity came again, she is ultra cool just hanging out like a normal person. Celebs who have huge entourages & bodyguards are so gauche. I remember one night at the Tunnel when Prince was walking down the big staircase and he was flanked by like 5 bodyguards and at least 5 more 'hangers on.' He really does dress like 'that' even when partying. well if anyone can pull off a lilac ruffled bullfighters uniform its Prinn. Back to BeavHer Keri is cool she just hangs out like everyone else and so theres no weird 'star-gazing' celeb hubbub even tho shes really famous. she always wears this cream wool sweater and brown corduroys, demure & cozy. I.!!] JJ & Chris from DC spending a few days in nyc & englewood (201) were kind enuf to celebrate my (circa) birthday with me at Tis, NY's longest running and surely best mod-indie-britpop-chemicalbeats-groovealicious saturday night anglo party. upon my arrival tuesday suits were playing, pretty good support act with jazz/surf inflected chording and stentorian, choppy timbres. jj gave me tootsie pop stickers (!!!) birthday cake labels (total= 28 candles) and a quick's root beer lolly. showed justine pic of anouck lepere with her new big augmented boobs. I recommended myspace to becca. donna is still my friend on "spencer I". becca likes gotham girls roller derby. lots of rockstar. morningwood played. as yet they were unsigned. now you all know them. chantalle claret has gone from mod party list girl to charismatic raunchy singer-star-mama. these guys can play with a teetering on collapse but just in the nick of time punk veering crashing banging buzzsaw abandon that is feedback filled yet also diverse and , improbably, scripted. in absence of YYY MW seems to have grabbed that anarcho-Blondie niche. I gave bartender dee marukawa japanese bubblegum + she gave me 2 free red stripes. karen elson sang, accompanied by james iha. not only is karen 1) one of the greatest models ever 2) one of the most beautiful red heads in human history, 3) shes also an extraordinary singer!!!! think of mazzy star's hope sandoval. so slow. soft. coo-ing. incredible singer + great repertoire of alternative rock classics!! karen played acoustic gtr. she blew mouth harp. and hit xylophone !!

* next I wandered stanton for a bit. found hot coffee in korean deli with supernatural bagpipe music playing. extremely otherworldly moment. Id just seen karen the worlds most beautiful woman sing hypnotically transcendantly; then secret machines whipped up a total; frenzy of modern psychedlic transportation sturm & drang, then rushing on hot coffee in 30 degree weather with harsh lit korea deli bagpipers...surreal & otherworldly. heaven tonite.
** finally, cabbed it to sound factory. west 46th st [now pacha]. beauitiful old-school huge disco. 4 floors. 'snow' everywhere. good sound very hard hitting. empty at 1 but medium crowd by 3. met maya anthropology at CCNY. talked to some JNR expert whos staying til afternoon. (starts at 11 pm goes til 2 pm or so!!) danced to 'love sensation' remix. the 718 girls loved that. danced to 'flippin' by exacta, 1 of newest JNR smashes, defines rubbery bassline & tripped out vocal/effects. fun crowd....stayed til 530 but party hadntt even 'begun' if u can believe it. so i lasted like 1-530, i guess move is to come at 4 and stay til 8? 9??? tried 180. orange energy drink. good taste but doesnt pack rockstar buzz. **3/4 Im sure it got better at 6-8-10-12 +

W APRIL 2008:: sasha, agnete h, suvi, guinevere by roversi. actually in some ways this edit equals or surpasses weber's. i am so so into sasa & agnete. suvi's a bit of a loose dirty tramp but shes an excellent model. guinevere Im pretty over but she did great stuff like 5 yrs ago. actually roversi's new photo show at pace in nyc is guinevere. i will see that this weekend. the abstracted impressionistic blurred colours here is dream like heavenly and genius. the line up of photogs that W gives us is incredible. teller. weber. mert/marcus. inez/vinoodh. mcdean. lorca-dicorcia. and roversi is arguably as god as any, well maybe i like weber & teller a touch more but its reallly close. and alex white's styling here is worldf class, genius too. youve got to see this dream like edit , sasha, agnete, the clothes, the colours, the blurry... its amazing it might be the best edit of 2008 ALSO ! love it. 11+/12 of 10 !!

new orleans by bruce weber w/karen elson. weber's 2006 kate/detroit edit was my #1 of that year. this is similar, and fairly close. its a subjective and sensitive look at a soulful us city. weber's affection for NO is obvious. his eye is as great, specific & far-ranging as ever. karen's 2008 come-back is amazing. i loved her in 2000 & shes still doing it. how does karen compare to kate in 2006? at least as beautiful, yet not quite as earthy/sensuous or 'actress.' kate REALLY inhabited that edit. karen's great, but kate was a bit better. i like Dr. John here. karen is n amazing singer. i wish W had included a karenj CD, rather than that dumb dvd they gave us for "ART" issure 2007. karl templer's styling here is brilliant, he & weber work hand in glove with karen. love the fats domino. and the native indian chief. this will likely be among top 3 edits of 2008, but i dont think its quite as great as kate/detroit/2006 [think of kate making out with vinyl LPs scattered there!!] but karen's real good & templer rocked the styling. rating : 11+ of 10 its among very very best of 2008.

W MARCH 2008:: "harlem day" craig mcdean alex white. among best lara stone to date. fifties, sixties make up, hair perfect. even meghan collison not bad here. just kidding, meghan diane arbus-like. harlem brown stones, atmosphere just superb. alex whites 1960 styling beyond great. mcdean here maybe surpasses mert/marcus. retro look, yet perfect 2008 wow !!!! aesthetically this may surpass editorial #1. mcdean, lara, white all earn bonuses. retro futurism here epitomizes harlem 1958-2008. which is best, this or 'pinup'? on pure aesthetics this is best. but overall impact, mert/marcus win. 9.9 of 10.

lily cole in dc by juergen teller. teller might be the best W photog of recent years. he actually makes lily c sexy here & that is nearly unprecedented [Ive seen maybe 3 great lily edits ever, W years ago & then 1 each in uk & paris vogue i think]. anyway teller really gets creative with the dc momuments/backgrounds here. but what actually makes this edit so genius is camilla nickerson's styling,. as usual she just thinks outside the box in presenting many sexy, diaphanous, transparent looks - and thus lily's sensuous quotient goes way up. really i love every pic & look here but the marc/armani limo & miu miu blouse/shorts pics are partic extraordinary. its another epic length 28 page teller w edit & as youve seen in 2006 & 2007, when teller is at this level hes pretty much delivering the best photos in any us mag, and maybe worldwide [perhaps paris vogue at its best matches this]. youve got to see camillas styling, lilys beauty & the brill DC settings. amazing 9.5 of 10.

heidi mount, elsa sylvan & abbey lee by mcdean. W tous this as a futuristic edit & Id have to say thats accurate. the setting appears to be Bonneville salt Flats in UT & that is quite a lunar /other-worldly landscape, wit the endless flat plane and salty white ground. alex white styled here shes just so amazing in W monthly, I mean grace coddington is super accomplished in us vogue monthly but alex [like camilla nickerson also in W] just thinks way outside the box. these are such cool future looks almost a BladeRunner thing in the desert. every look kicks ass, marc, pugh, balen, jil, ysl, margiela, V&R, Gio, lanvin, prada, giles. when Vogue gave us that stupid 'superheroes' edit with coco it tried to be future, but it was just a mash. this is a future edit & the clothes really tell a story. plus I love the girls here, heidi's looking better every time in W, abbey is gorgeous & elsa is at least as cute as abbey. the way mcdean shoots in W runs rings around his good, but safe, vogue work. this is an exemplary 2008 fashion shoot & is another reason why W is the best in USA. 9.5 of 10. oh the makeup is out of this world too :)

W FEB 2008 natasha poly & lily d by thompson. wow totally great night time edit in vegas. deep sexy sapphic set pieces, poly is as great as shes been in a few years & lily d , as usual is a total top 5-10 worldwide supe. in fact in some ways this shoot takes these girls to a diff place than we usually see. karl templer's styling of chic evening looks in white & black is so great - he actually delivers more than thompson's pics, altho for thompson its a strong job, usually he shoots dull actresses. oh yeah these are good evening looks & compositions. similar to that W 2007 edit with rhoda, that was mert/marcus i think? or inez? similar night time pool scene? anyway that 07 W shoot took rhoda where she hadnt previously gone & this does it with poly & lily d. love the clothes & thompson does shoot an excellent fashion edit a few times a year in w - and this is his best in recent memory. Great!! 9.2 of 10

BAZAAR FEB 2008:: julia stegner by solve sundsbo. in 2007 julia was my #2 model behind trentini. looking at these pics im reminded that julia is the best model alive & possibly the greatest ever. these are swim looks shot in the desert. the piocs are fine, altho lindbergh, mert/marcus, richard misrach and many others have done better with this. but george cortina only has to style some sleek & abbreviated b&w swim/resort looks on julia & its the best thing Ive seen in a us mag in months. its pathetic that anna wintour gives us like 2 or 3 julia edits ever in vogue. HB has her every year or so & its the best modelling in any us mag. Im serious julia is the greatest model ive ever seen & whenever i see her in person I am breathless like no woman has ever affected me. for real. 9.1 of 10.

BAZAAR MAY 2008:: julia stegner by tom munro. jules is the greatest model I have ever seen in my life & her 6'1" goddess frame is never better than when in swim. the hermes pic here is 1 of the best in any US fashion mag of 2008. the fact that Glenda gives us julia every 2 or 3 months in HB while anna hasnt used her in years is enough to make me declare HB a better US fash mag than vogue. arianne phillips edited lots of resort style looks theyre good, the pictures are better than that & julia is the best model ever. more work like this and she is going to top trentini or whomever for best model of 2008 at the end of the year. she is incredibly gorgeous in ferragamo pic. julia is #1 !! 9 of 10.
