* also went to the metro club in DC for some noisy industrial metal. and then to 11th hour house club with top tune psb 'you only tell me you love me when youre drunk.' another DC club that night was having 'cher night' [she was huge at that time with the 'believe' LP] and the 11th hour DJ was so pissed that Cher had stolen his whole crowd across town!
* the same night sasha was at twilo

feb 29 2000 morrissey played the beacon theatre with one of the greatest concerts ive ever seen in 36 years of going to concerts. hi-lites included 'lost' 'the more you ignore me' 'tomorrow' and his one & only ever only performance ever of david bowie's 'drive in saturday.'
a fan said to moz 'steven go to your room & clean it.' morrissey spun around & put the mike in my face & asked 'what does he mean? what does that mean' and I said 'used to be a sweet boy,' which can be clearly heard on the bootleg of this incredible gig [thanks, ezra!], I was there at the beacon theatre in 1985 for two smiths shows on meat is murder. the 1st smiths night ranks with the top 5-10 concerts ive ever seen. I would say that this leap year 2000 moz show at the beacon was more or less the equal of that smiths' night in 1985- 2 of the very best concerts Ive ever seen in 36 years of shows.

feb 2005 - 5 years ago
nyc nightlife february 2005

january 28, 2005
I attended a great Unknown People hosted party [thanks Jules!] at Duke & Duchess on 4th avenue. what is duke & duchess you may ask? well for about 3 weeks, it was the super cool lounge/disco owned by Butter's scott & richie. and this friday night, with the temperature hovering about 10 degrees, the amazing nyc inderground funky house legend JOESKI laid down a super deep retro disco R&B set & I swear it was like hearing frankie crocker on WBLS or shep pettibone & francois K on KISS FM in 1980 all over again. AMAZING disco funk from joeski [like metro area but way WAY better!!] and the party carried on until 5 am. within a week or so Duke & Duchess was closed never to reopen, and I still wonder what happened to chrissie miller's sophomore uniforms that the busboys and coaT CHECK GIRLS WORE AT d&d. So MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS...I guess you had to be there... 3 STARS OUT OF 5.
* i STARTED THE NIGHT at denizen in soho, talking art, music & scandinavia culture with the dynamic fiona sand.
** then over to luke & leroy for Mr. X's friday night party & thanks for playing my request, the pet shop boys' 'its a sin' *1/2 stars of 5.

feb. 4, 2005. I attended a fashion week opening night party at AER hosted by IMG's 7th on 6th, the daily, & tony theodore. it was free drinks & free admission all night. shapeshifter's 'lola's theme.' was the tune of the night. **1/4 of 5 stars.
* then up to spirit for junior vasquez' "RED" party. top tunes were pete heller's 'good love,' narcotic thrust 'safe from harm,' and deborah cox's 'things just aint the same.'
imo junior and spirit were not a good match. by contrast, last friday night junior took it back tio BassLine in tribeca where he started out 20+ years ago, and it was some of the best music & warmest vibe Ive felt at a club in 2006, when he's on few DJs can touch junior. RED party: ** of 5 stars.

feb. 11, 2005 I went to jeremy scott's fashion show after-party at tribeca grand. guests incl. lisa cant, caroline winberg, carmen kass, and anouck lepere [photo by jenny in my pictures]. top song was gwen's 'what you waiting for' [it was new & not played out yet] and it was 1 of the very best parties of 2005. **** of 5.
* then over to crobar for erick morillo. it had some of the best energy of any crobar night Ive been to, morillo's house music was superb. but it was just too crowded.
*** of 5 stars.

feb 18, 2005. I went to sin e on lower east for the pierces, a very talented country folk sister duo. chatted with albert hammond jr, kat pierce's fiancee, about cat stevens, salman rushdie & the byrds. opening band was au revoir simone, 3 gorgeous brooklyn brunettes who play keyboard driven modal french pop songs, a la stereolab but even more oblique and a lot prettier. au revoir simone remain one of my favourite NYC bands & they are still relatively unknown despite havinf tremendous appeal & being in japan. I bet you say that to all the girls. pierces: **3/4 of 5 stars. au revoir simone: ***1/2 of 5 stars.
* then over to crobar for holland's sander kleinenberg. sander plays a world class mix of progressive house, hard trance, pop and tech-house, but he seems to have ADD and you never know if hes going to be just pretty good or stunningly awesome. this night he was in between. ***3/4 of 5 stars.

feb. 20, 2005 junior sanchez played a special presidents day set at marquee. justine & michel T's MFer sleazefest was at the roxy.

feb. 22, 2005 ARE weapons were at LIT.

feb. 23, 2005 kings of leon were at irving plaza.

feb. 24, 2005 sean lennon & vincent gallo were at tonic.

feb. 25, 2005 animal collective were at bowery ballroom. nic fanciulli was at spirit. and MY TV's were at luna lounge.

* my favourite LPs in feb. 2005 incl. rockethouse's weapons of mass deception, sugar minott's 'at studio one,' bloc party 'silent alarm,' the bravery's debut LP, and st. etienne's stunning sub pop greatest hits 'travel edition' 1990-2005.

* my favourite art shows in feb 2005 incl milton avery's 'onrushing waves' at knoedler, truly virtuosic seascapes of eastern long island & cape cod. robert morris at leo castelli's 77th st gallery [YES castelli is still open, run by his widow, barbara bertozzi].

** other popular nightspots in feb 2005 incl. salon, [where manda hearst had her birthday, EKC in attendance], table 50, discoteque, flow, n/a, & coral room. to my knowledge most of these are closed or have changed names just over 1 year later.

Warhol/Edie Film Festival at Whitney Museum: Feb 1995 !!!

Warhol/Edie Film Festival at Whitney Museum: Feb 1995 !!!
15 years ago in nyc nightlife: feb. 1995

jan 30 1995 a CFDA event at lincoln center

feb. 2, 1995 D Generation played CBGB's.

feb 3 1995 The Whitney Museum on 75th & Madison had a month-long Andy Warhol film program. showcasing many rarely-seen and all-important warhol film projects from early silents like 'sleep' 'eat' and 'empire' through to sound films from the mid sixties. heres the lineup for feb 3 1995: 510 pm edie sedgwick in poor little rich girl. 735 the velvet underground symphony of sound. 855 edie poor little rich girl.
* here are a few thoughts on the warhol films I saw in feb 1995 at the whitney retrospective program:
One of the more notable warhol films is "the Velvet Underground:Symphony of sound" a rehearsal film, including nico & her son ari bologne, 30 minutes of cool feedback and a mantra-like trance effect with the guitars of reed & morrison , cale's viola & mo tucker's metronome- like drumming. the film climaxes with the NYC police entering the Factory & busting up the film due to excess noise on 47th st.

one of warhol's best colour films is edie sedgwick in 'Lupe,' a scary & haunting set piece with edie dressed to the nines eating dinner at a richly-appointed dakota apartment on west 72nd st as she free-associates and chatters on talking to herself for about 30 minutes. It's a version of the real-life Hollywood suicide of actress Lupe Velez, and given edie's fragile mental state & drug overdose death about 5 years later, this film is eerily precient, harrowing, sad, darkly comic and totally involving.

'beauty #2': imo edie's very best performance in a warhol film, where she makes out with 2 guys & smokes weed in her black bra and panties on her bed in a 1 hour film. the 1st half of the film is totally out of focus; when the focus suddenly is corrected in part 2 its a revelation; edie's co-star here is gino piserchio; its a fascinating and sexually charged film of twisted near-animalistic courtship, the young stud and a wasted, deathly skinny edie, still somehow compelling and erotic in her sultry black french lingerie & wasted, masochistic vulnerability. Lupe & Beauty #2 are by far the best edie sedgwick films you will ever see, if youre lucky enough to see them screened !!!

I understand the new , pathetic 'Factory Girl' film recreates 'Beauty #2' but of course gets it all wrong: as this week's village voice review describes. Here's an excerpt from nathan lee in this week's Voice:

"Hickenlooper ...mutilates Beauty #2, the richest of Warhol's cine-interrogations and the apex of Edie's underground Superstardom. Plunked on a bed with a chunk of stud named Gino, Edie submits to the offscreen questions of Chuck Wein (a clueless Jimmy Fallon), an old friend of Edie's whose crucial and controversial role in the Factory ecosystem is here glossed over. Factory Girl literalizes the rape scenario implicit in Beauty #2, escalating into the vulgar (and wildly exaggerated) spectacle of Wein forcing Gino on the distressed starlet. "

feb 8 1995 party at the limelight disco 2000 with kenny kenny.

feb 9 1995 beavher at don hills with nancy boy performing & guest liz cohen.
* the same night i also saw edie sedgwick in 'lupe' at the whitney museum at 830 pm.
* the same night Ozone at demerara at 215 west 28th st

feb 10 1995 scotto's Abducted afterhours at the tunnel starting at 4 am.

feb. 11, 1995 I went to expo in times sq [now club new york] with alan barcoff and run dmc gave a surprise appearance playing an exciting 20 minute set! JMJ RIP!

feb. 14 1995 Suede played the manhattan center [7th floor ballroom] with richard oakes making his nyc debut. if youve seen the 'introducing the band' concert film you know how fiery Suede 1995 was, touring the peerless lp 'dogmanstar' it was 1 of the best concerts I saw in the 1990s. setlist incl: we are the pigs. killing of a flashboy. animal nitrate. the wild ones. pantomime horse. metal mickey. the asphalt world. so young. heroine. new generation. this hollywood life. imo suede was the best band of the 90s & also the best live band I saw in the 90s.
* the afterparty was at the tunnel.

feb 15 1995 Bridget Hall did a polo in store promotion at bloomingdales on 59th st.
* afterwards down to cafe tabac

feb 16 1995 i went to gregory crewdson's opening on prince street where i met zoe cassavettes.

feb 23, 1995 went to ozone at demerara/planet 28 with adam x dj-ing & saw old sheep meadow & nightlife friend heather summerfield.

feb 24, 1995 went to scotto's after hours at the tunnel 'abducted' which BEGAN at 4:am. & ran into carissa glucksman from liquid sky & 'kids'

feb. 28, 1995 elastica played their debut nyc show at mercury lounge it was packed and then some but that first LP is pretty darn good.

* the film 'boys on the side' featured chrissie hynde covering morrissey's 'everyday is like sunday.'

oasis' 'whatever' was a current favourite 45, back when every oasis 45 was great & had equally great b-sides.

suede released 'new generation' from the incredible 'dogmanstar' lp with essential b-sides 'bentswood boys' 'together' and 'eno's introducing the band,' on Feb 1, 1995. Im not aware of any rock bands in the 21st century releasing brilliant 45s regularly as suede did 12 years ago.

favourite art shows in feb 1995 incl kandinsky at MOMA. james nares at paul kasmin. donald judd at paula cooper 155 wooster. richard misrach at curt marcus 578 broadway.

my business meetings in feb 1995 incl bowles/sorokko gallery in soho, schmidt/bingham in the fuller building, & gallery henoch.

my favourite tv show in feb 1995 was AAA lucha libre on galavision.
