EDIT #1 amber by klein. I think meisel usually shoots amber in 21st century for us vogue but klein actually did amazing here. sure amber is pretty air-brushed last 5+ years but more often than not she still has it, especially here. tonne goodman's styling is so brill, this deserves 1st edit, has look of london 1965 + eggleston's memphis 1969. its just so brill, its like that testino/daria/hitchcock thing, makes me wonder why US vogue cant always be this good. klein is so inconsistent in us vogue but hes top class here. love the way the photo-tones are processed. and amber & especially tonne's styling are awesome. remarkable. 9 of 10.
EDIT #2. gisele by sims. trying to think why this is so average. it's gisele's blank faced & stilted modelling. while sims' pics are rote for him, with a better [newer] girl it could have been more substantial. anna is using this marie-amelia sauve a lot now. Im unconvinced as to her skill. I wld say pretty average here, although the pastel-y colours do have a vibe & that even feeds off klein's tones in EDIT #1. but really gisele is dead fish mannequin, styling is just ok & sims doesnt bring it up actually. 6.4 of 10.
EDIT #3 kate moss by testino + retrospective. new kate pics by testino are great, just like amber by klein "Chelsea girl" not the warhol, the London 65 CG. retro pics show that Kate is greatest model ever. anna brings kate back to vogue cover, but with subtle "Age" dig. fuuck anna, kate's the greatest & shes 100000X cooler than anna. great work by kate, testino & grace. 7.9 for retro feature, cover & new pics.

AMBER/KLEIN IS OF 2008'S BEST. self referential "editors" special rocked hard cos of karen, maryna, tanya, raquel, & sasha. loving all the klein/cat/Bridge work. YSL/penn is all time classic. and kate/testino is equal to amber/klein/chelsea and thats Top. age stuff in between didnt really rankle even if NJ Roy & Becker are toy town. there is much to enjoy here - for the young & the perennially young at heart haha loool TWO THUMBS UP ANNA BANANA !!!! :)))))))

oct 2 2003 Piano's with aerial Love feed: excellent thurs night in the big city. first piano's on lower east. trendy-ish club-lounge opened early spring & still going strong. some people dismiss piano's as a scenester/trendy/superficial venue, the first of its kind on the lower east side in our lifetimes. But i welcome piano's as a cozy place to hang out, it's clean, not a smelly dive like many old-skool NY bars. and they book some good bands, which are great to see in the small-ish music room, prob 100 people , maybe almost 200 when maxed out.
Thurs night was aerial love feed. NYC has produced scores of great bands over last few years, many getting attention starting with the strokes & then YYY, interpol, longwave etc. At this point I like alf the best of any of them. their new dummer really pounds the hard tracks home, i swear he drums like a NIN record. theres even a 4/4 disco beat to new 'lock & load' version. alf sounds like PiL, siouxsie, and some other edgy noise rock cant identify. these 5 guys play great & theyre great people too. so many ny bands try to do a reductivist garage pop but alf is much more ambitious, trying for a dance/new wave/industrial/rock mix that they are totally scoring with now. the 3 best bands in ny now are alf, everyothers and ambulance ltd. everyothers sounds like 70s stones/TRex. ambulance sounds like 80s new order & 90s MBV.
alf is more original than either band & they are kicking major butt with the new drummer. great set ***3/4

great to see richie, his gf, hilary monroe, frank, Christiane, even a medium beav night is better than most clubs great nights.

Luna lounge: ambulance ltd. extra crowded. this band is blowing up. strummer from beavher came. her hair was like a stevie nicks pineapple splayed hairspray cut in her dark brown color: more of an ann wilson (HEART) look actually. good set by ambulance. they play their dream pop/shoegazing very well, write sweet melodies & sing em nice. but over even like 8 songs it was too repetitive & I can only hope they are writing feverishly for their full length CD in 2004. the 4 song EP I have is awesome.

One of best Tis' in months. talked to justine about MBV & moz tees. saw kerri, terry, daniel, saw keith ozar had great talk about new bands & CDs. mike lamorte came. bob, becca, don talked about bebe buell & parker & the website. danced to lets go to bed, 11:51; move yr feet (best song) bohemian like me (2nd best song). WOOO!! gosh that rock star does wonders!! BOY GEORGE came!!!!! everyone was excited, it was cool to see him dancing to disco 2000, his head is shaved for the Taboo play (leigh bowery bio) and george is def heavier than Ive seen him, also not as tall as Id expected...? AND he danced with this small 19 yr old looking girl!! - go figure!!-
[ps jj wanted to know MORE about george: well, he was wearing a charcoal grey sack suit, possibly with subtle pinstripes, but generally a boxy grey suit that looked english/westwood but cldnt be sure. it was very full & boxy & gave the impression that he is quite round shaped now. also if u think about George in Culture club he looked like 6'1" but in person i'd say he looked like 5'10"/11" max. if any makeup it was around his eyes but mostly looked like an actor who had shaved head 7 took stage makeup off. ]
jacqueline the seductress came. nice talking about george with her. blondes inc played. actually they were better than ambulance!! very 70s stones/clash 1980/ Trex 1973 sound. they can play; they write some catchy tunes; they look good. cover of white light/heat well recvd. a few more 'hits' in the song dept & they will be going somewhere. i guess the college kids are back for thksgving break. best tis in months. hopefully Tis will stay strong thru new yrs. *cheers*mates*

sept 30, 1998 brian jonestown massacre played brownies on ave a.
oct 2 1998 the jesus & mary chain played life on bleecker st!! well the jamc but minus william reid the guitarist who had quit in the midst of this Munki tour. it wld prove to be the last tour & LP for jamc until 2007. i saw jamc's first nyc show at danceteria circa 1985 when they had only released a few 45's like upside down, never understand & trip you up. I was an avid follower of theirs throughout the 80s & 90s, seeing most of their nyc gigs at venues like the ritz, the world, roseland, and giants stadium with DM in 1990. despite william's absence, the life show was decent HERE'S MOST OF THE SET: snakedriver. happy when it rains. teenage lust. mo tucker. stardust remedy. i love rock n roll. sugar ray. sidewalking. new kinda kick [cramps cover]. reverence. *** of 5 stars. Im psyched that jamc are recording a new LP & that new 45 'all things must pass' is a very encouraging start.
* the same night twilo hosted darren emerson from underworld along with jim masters & steve stoll.

oct 10, 1998 the cooler on 14th st hosted The bounce, with bands kitty in the tree. damn personals, holmes & the panic. 8 years later the damned personals scored an unlikely success when one of their members joined carl barat's dirty pretty things. Im not sure if DPTs are even together in 2008?

oct 16, 1998 the penultimate Tiswas was held at coney island high on st marks place. for whatever reason, Tis was held on Fridays in the fall of 1998, in the final weeks at coney. the charade headlined, guests incl scott anna & danny from nj, alex english & steve & pedro. top choons from nick incl. only love can break your heart, panic, mersey paradise, boys dont cry, JB night train, and MBV only when you sleep. also vaseline, itchykoo park, popscene, metal mickey, jesus hairdo, chems leave home, weirdo, tattva [trivia question : did nick ever play kula shaker at tis? : YES!]. satisfaction, babies & supersonic. ***3/4 of 5 stars

Ae's set was made up of mainly LP5 pieces with maybe some EP7 textures thrown in. It was a stunning display of live experimental electronics & breakbeats. Ae's 2008 "Quaristice" was a decent electronic CD but nothing like CD5 or even Confeld really. . ***3/4 OF 5 STARS.

oct 30 1998 the final Tiswas ever at coney island high, again on a friday night, oddly. the upper crust performed. guests incl will from realistics, lena & matt. top choons from nick: common people dance mx, girlfriend in a coma, tainted love [original], wake up! boo, temptation, boys better, johnny chrome, trash, white shirt, cant get out of bed, under my thumb, connection, beat surrender, bluetonic, dexys burn it down [!!], lets spend the night together, tin soldier & mersey paradise. banging set from nick there!! ***3/4 of 5 stars.

my favourite LPs in oct 1998 incl. burt bacharach & elvis costello's 'painted from memory' one of the most haunting collections of orchestral pop of the last decade. also oasis' the masterplan, showing how superb their 45 b-sides were in the 90s before everything went all wrong. marion's 'the program,' another under-appreciated Britpop act. the classic nuggets LP was reissued on 4 cds, all brill, a must! and the style council's stunning career retrospective 4 cd box set.
favourite films in oct 1998 was whit stillman's the last days of disco. I went to studio 54 perhaps 100 times in the late 1970s & early 80s & it is still by far the single greatest club I ever attended. 'modulations' a house music/dance feature with great dance talent like dj sneak, ltj bukem, orbital, rbt moog, giorgio moroder, autechre, prodigy, marshall jefferson, juan atkins carl cox, derrick carter & arthur baker. In 2008 I only see cox, carter 7 sneak performing at the level they accomplished in 1998. and 'catwalk' with christy turlington, a somewhat rare docu.
my favourite art shows in oct 1998 were mark rothko at the whitney museum. wolfgang tilmans at andrea rosen. & tony oursler at metro pictures.
a few favourite models in oct 1998 incl bridget hall, jamie king, amber valetta, dawn radenbaugh, jaime rishar & georgina grenville. Of those i think georgina was the best in the 1990s.

oct 29 1998 the charade played luna lounge at 171 ludlow st, with set highlight 'nancy goes to london.'
oct 30 1998 the final Tiswas ever at coney island high, again on a friday night, oddly. the upper crust performed. guests incl will from realistics, lena & matt. top choons from nick: common people dance mx, girlfriend in a coma, tainted love [original], wake up! boo, temptation, boys better, johnny chrome, trash, white shirt, cant get out of bed, under my thumb, connection, beat surrender, bluetonic, dexys burn it down [!!], lets spend the night together, tin soldier & mersey paradise. banging set from nick there!! ***3/4 of 5 stars.

my favourite LPs in oct 1998 incl. burt bacharach & elvis costello's 'painted from memory' one of the most haunting collections of orchestral pop of the last decade. also oasis' the masterplan, showing how superb their 45 b-sides were in the 90s before everything went all wrong. marion's 'the program,' another under-appreciated Britpop act. the classic nuggets LP was reissued on 4 cds, all brill, a must! and the style council's stunning career retrospective 4 cd box set.
favourite films in oct 1998 was whit stillman's the last days of disco. I went to studio 54 perhaps 100 times in the late 1970s & early 80s & it is still by far the single greatest club I ever attended. 'modulations' a house music/dance feature with great dance talent like dj sneak, ltj bukem, orbital, rbt moog, giorgio moroder, autechre, prodigy, marshall jefferson, juan atkins carl cox, derrick carter & arthur baker. In 2008 I only see cox, carter 7 sneak performing at the level they accomplished in 1998. and 'catwalk' with christy turlington, a somewhat rare docu.
my favourite art shows in oct 1998 were mark rothko at the whitney museum. wolfgang tilmans at andrea rosen. & tony oursler at metro pictures.
a few favourite models in oct 1998 incl bridget hall, jamie king, amber valetta, dawn radenbaugh, jaime rishar & georgina grenville. Of those i think georgina was the best in the 1990s.

EDIT #1 lucy liu by lindbergh. this is embarrassing. yes the olympics are in china summer 2008. so they cast lucy liu and set it in a stadium? with rachel zoe styling? this is as corrupted as I have seen lindbergh in HB. zoe was mediocre in july with c murphy but this is gross. the clothes are a mess & tawdry. wow this sucks 1 of 10.
edit #2 ali stephans, aline weber & anna j by terry tsiolis. there are a few decent things here. i like ali even if her expression is gaping-jaw in too many pics. but cute. and aline weber is a good girl but also should be better than here. anna j, I thought she was a lot better than this. brana wolf's styling looks more inconsistent than some times but can be good in parts. or maybe its the callow-ish girls that make this look less-than-perfect? Dunno the pics seem good tho. I do like seeing fresher girls howevs. Its far from perfect but its a 6.8 of 10
edit #3 toni garrn by sundsbo. now this is more like a classic quality HB edit. in fact the desert setting looks like lindbergh. not sure why garrn isnt more famous/ doesnt see more work but she sure is pretty. even with this fried frizz hair. the makeup is cool and pastel-y with the dsert colours too. and cortina's styling is also more like classic HB. good stuff here 7.4 of 10

HUGE disappointment considering how hot biel is. maybe W will let thompson or someone shoot her nude & the world will smile again. 4 of 10.

DAILY LOWE & MARK RONSON are trying to hail a cab as I drive by them in the back seat of a Yellow cab heading to Bryant Park. I immediately spotted Daisy as model-esque but I wasn't quite sure it was her. She was wearing a Guns 'n' Roses black tee shirt with an all-over design incl. top-hat, skull and a deck of cards. It was a fairly new Guns tee, not particularly worn. She worn shiny plastic PVC trousers, quite tight and so shiny as to be liquid in appearance. She wore black boots with spiked heels, possibly with straps at the ankle, a fairly sexy S&M-ish book for those who admire that style. Her hair was a very thick dark brunette bangs, nearly black, full and hanging just over her eyes. In recent years this exact 'doo has been worn famously by Belgian model Anouck LePere, and obscurely by Brooklyn 'mild' hipster Justine Delaney.
Daisy and Mark appeared to be nearly the same height. Since I was below them in a cab, not walking next to them, I can't gauge their height compared to mine, but I will guess they are about 5'10"? It could be a bit more, Daisy's boots were high & she is a model after all. I did find her nose to be very flat and wide & frankly, while she does carry a certain 'Swinging London Go-Go Chick' appeal, like Agyness Deyn, these new English girls have a lot more dress-sense than 'beauty.' Models like Snejana or Vlada are wayyy more beautiful facially, aesthetically, than these somewhat-middling, highly-styled, but common-place, English girls.
Mark's appearance was a let down. I've actually been aware of him for a decade or more, some ridiculous early modelling in tight biking gear in a magazine like "17" or something; his incompetant DJ-ing at Centrofly 5 years ago playing hackneyed hip-hop in the basement when the real DJs were upstairs; And his recent Smiths/Supremes cover is one of the most objectionable pieces of music I've ever heard. Mark was wearing a ridiculous emerald green shiny long-sleeved shirt that he could have stolen from the Lucky Charms Elf. And non-descript black pants that hung like sloppy college jeans but looked like black cuorduroys. While Daisy's PVC's were skin-tight, Mark didn't even know how to buy pants the right leg length for himself. His appearance also suffered in person - my best look-a-alike comparison for him is Ron Pallillo - "Horshack" on "Welcome Back Kotter."
As I recall Mark's sister Charlotte was unhappy when Mark met Daisy- was she 16 at the time? How old is Mark now, 30 at least? And how old is Daisy now, is she 17? The age difference on the street was pretty overt, 30+ year old adult with teen-ager, but I guess that's the way it goes. Now if someone would only ask him to play some different records.

EDIT #1: christy turlington by michael thompson. its the sexiest turly has looked in more than 5 years. camilla nickersons styling is the key. these abbreviated pieces incl swim are just so hot, and turly's form is really amazing for a mom & model circa 90s. thompson def comes thru but not quite on the art level of say his sasha resort story in 07. but then again you could have said its by mert/marcus & its not impossible. and turly is just out of hand great here. I didnt think she still had this in her. 7.6 of 10 ps Greek/Roman vases/sculptures contrast really smart, makes the whole thing better

EDIT #3 gisele my mert/marcus. technicaly the pics are great. future effects. colours. alex whites styling is exciting but also a bit 'kitchen sink'? gisele has a bit of her "Im dumb" character here; yet also a super-human body & shes sexy... just dont love her performance say vs turly in edit #1?? but no arguing with her tit on 191 and espec her cultivated ass on 205. just shopot her bare ass all day & youll get a famous edit. 7.6 of 10, nice pics

oshinko- I seem to be on an oshinko appetizer kick lately too & this was a quality if unremarkable appetizer.
avovado/cucumber roll: really tasty roll espec the fresh avocado.
Cabernet sauvignon - Redwood Creek - I am on a huge cabernet kick lately & this was a complex & multi-dimentional Red - at turns: tangy, classic, grape-y, fluid, standoffish, cat-like, fruity and sweet !!!! absolutely delicious. and a small hot sake to finish the meal off - they are pretentious at shiroi but the service by Michiko is superb & also matre d' Andrew treats me like a friend - really outstanding & satisfying dinner.

edit #1. carolyn murphy by lindbergh. the ocean setting is the best thing here. murphy certainly holds up but shes not my kind of 2008 girl. lindbergh obvs knows how to shoot but its another bazaar shoot where I feel he gives about 25% of his effort - in 1993 it seemed much better. rachel zoe styled its adequate but not much more. acceptable opening edit but also a yawner. 6.5 of 5.
edit #2/cover. gwyn paltrow by lindbergh. gwyn is an actress whom sometimes i think is hot & sometimes i want to kill her. her sexy gwyn showed up here. the subscriber cover in prouenza is much better. lindbergh tried harder here than with murphy & brana's styling is far better than zoe's. much better than expected & gwyn is hot in mini's. 7.7. of 10
EDIT #3: rhoda by kadel. rhoda is blonde & it works. her work is actually at a very high level since 2007. kadel also shot great here & mossman's styling is the best in the ish so far. 16 pg edit this at least can compare with a strong, classic HB story that you'd see in last 10-20 years. 7.9 of 10 really rhoda & kadel impressed.

EDIT #6 bridget moynahan by doug friedman. pics are like InStyle maybe worse. copy is pretty dull. i mean if gwyn is only slightly interesting, what can you say for BM, whoever the hell she is?! actually HB shld have sent kevin sessums to ask her the worst moment when she was pregnant and brady was already with gisele. hell send joan didion or ellen barkin to ask BM that question & maybe it would be worth reading an HB article more than once a year. still not sure who BM is. no wonder this is back of book. 4 of 10 cos its fun to think af BM crying over Gisele.
