NYC NIGHTLIFE in MARCH 1994: The Cocteau Twins & Pavement

NYC NIGHTLIFE in MARCH 1994: The Cocteau Twins & Pavement
NYC NIGHTLIFE in MARCH 1994:

march 11 1994 my brother's birthday party at hatsuhana on 48th st guests incl. susan holmes from elite, later married duff from GnR & designed swimwear.

march 12, 1994 the cocteau twins at roseland [4 calendar cafe tour?] with luna & moose opening. the cocteaus were pretty good live but the late 80s ritz show i saw of theirs was much better. I also found luna to be disappointing compared to the excellent galaxie 900. to be fair it was their 1st LP, I know many people became fans later on.

march 22, 1994 morrissey released 'vauxhall & I' which may be his best solo work & imo this LP compares favourably with smiths' LPs like meat is murder, the queen is dead & strangeways here we come. 15 years later I dont think Moz has matched Vauxhall on LP; but his gigs from 99-present rank among the greatest shows he's played, solo or with Smiths.

march 24, 1994 tickets went on sale for morrissey's carnegie hall shows, [april 11 & 12], which were later cancelled. he's playing carneigie, webster & bowery on this tour 2009.

march 25, 1994 I saw madder rose at brownie's courtesy of tvt. I very much miss browniesw as an intimate ave a venue.

march 30, 1994 pavement at irving plaza on the crooked rain tour. hi-lites incl. silence kid, cut your hair, and heaven is a truck. the band was good but the slacker crowd was flat. *** of 5 stars. It was a treat to go backstage however & hang with evan dando & chris lombardi from matador records.

my business meetings in march 1994 incl mark kostabi at kostabi world.

the whitney museum continued its retrospective of andy warhol's 1960s films incl. many rarely seen edie sedgwick, nico, and velvet underground classics. I filmed a cable TV "weather report" with the underground film stars nico star and nick zedd at the whitney museum march 26.

2 music fanzines were favourites in 1994, morrissey's Morrizine & the suede fanzine swayed.

some of my favourite restaurants in march 1994 incl skyyline coffee shoppe on 75th, & soupburg on 79/80 and lexington. by the summer I went vegetarian & Ive never gone back to meat eating. skyyline was a nyc institution for about 50 years but closed 5 years ago and is now a crap "starwich" yuck.

some of my favourite music in march 1994 incl. morrissey's the more you ignore me 45, pavement's crooked rain & slanted/enchanted, dinosaur jr living all over me, cranberries linger, and snoop's gin & juice.

* more march 1994 news as seen on my video show 'the weather report': Vol. 14" a Media deconstruction episode filmed between Feb. 21 and March 7, 1994.

POP Art/Andy Warhol: A book on NICO from the Velvet Underground is reviewed in the New York Times.
* Lisa Robinson broke the world exclusive story ion the NY Post that the VU 1993 re-union was over, due to Lou Reed's opressive production demands on John Cale.
* Edie Sedgwick in the pages of Vogue with some rare 1960s b&w photos !!
* and Werther's Original caramel hard candies; Top Cat the cartoon cat; Mickey Mouse.

Sports/Video: The Olympics were the top news story in Feb/March 1994, particularly the soap opera-like rivalry between American skaters Nancy Kerrigan & Tonya Harding. It's no exaggeration to say that these 2 women were on the front page of the Post, News & the Times for 2 weeks straight! Dont believe me? Just watch! I show every front page headline of these 2 & you'll quickly remember it was a sopa opera that riveted the entire world !! PLUS I show a cool video of Kerrigan's silver medal winning short program, set to the music of the dance mix of St Etienne's "Pale Movie" !!! In the end Oksana Baiul took the Gold as the entire world watched!
* and Wrestling's Main Event's April 1994 issue is covered, a magazine I edited in the late 1980s, with STING on the cover !!!

Music News/Magazine deconstruction. The magazine of the month was RAYGUN issue #14 wioth Morrissey on the cover!! Hopefully youve seen RAYGUN, the predecessor to NYLON via publisher/editor Marvin Scott Jarrett, and RAYGUN was much more experimental and arty than NYLON has ever been. Youll LOVE the Morrissey layout in RAYGUN #14 I show, as well as a Pavement article too.
* VOX March 1994 from England with Brett Anderson from Suede on the cover ! And the Stone Roses.
* a sculpture of the Beatles circa Sgt Pepper !!

Fashion/Models: Some hot video of the Chanel spring/summer 1994 runway show, including super-duper models christy turlington, linda evangelista, nadja auermann & bridget hall, including swimwear, at the absolute apogee of their modelling careers & runway skills.
* "W" has long been my favourite magazine & early 1994 had some superb "W" covers, including Kate Moss & Linda Evangelista, all of which are shown on tonight's episode.
* Bridget Hall's Calvin Klein campaign. Town & Country March 1994 with Kelly Klein on the cover!!

The Banana Splits: Ive been a huge Banana Splits fan since I first saw them on Saturday morning TV in the late 1960s! And tonight's show features a couple of appearance from the Splits as well as their neighbours The Sour Grapes Bunch !! Check it!

ASTROLOGY: The NY Post's great astrologer the late Patric Walker is shown. In 2009 Sally Brompton, a protege of Walker, holds down the Posts's astrology, but I have yet to find another astrologer to match the much-missed wisdom & philosophy of the late great Patric Walker.

Animal Rights: "Beverly Hills 90210" had a great episode where Shannon Doherty & Tori Spelling joined PETA & campaigned for animal rights & against animal testing!!! See why "BH902" was still one of the best shows on TV in 1992. Admit it, you watched it every week just like I did !!!

Weather: Black & white weather maps from the New York Times. Colour weather maps from Long Island Newsday.
