dec 3 1999 Exit was a recently opened club on west 56th st [earlier carbon, later Ikon, now terminal 5 ] Diana Balton & I celebrated Sagittarius with music by Peter Rauhofer/Club 69. ***1/2 of 5 stars. now you knopw who peter rauhofer is.. good, not great.
* the same night carl cox and darren emerson were at twilo . and the makeup were at maxwell's in hoboken. gosh i shld hv gone to coxy 1

dec 4 1999 i took the path to maxwell's in hoboken nj to see lloyd cole solo acoustic. guests incl jj & chris from DC & sam kripalani. **** of 5 stars
* then cabbed it back to 212 to hit tiswas at don hill's in soho. nick's top choons: head music & lazy by suede. staying out for the summer by dodgy. vapour trail by ride & mersey paradise by the roses. *** of 5 stars. inm dec 2009 im listening to 'head music' almost every day - im serious suede was the best band of the 1990's 11

dec 11 1999 the salford lads 'the east coast's only smiths tribute band' headlined Tiswas. the band included dj jess, john k, and ezra from sadie.
nick's choons incl jumping jack flash, weirdo & sproston green, spirit in the sky by dr & the medics, & in between days. **** of 5 stars . im feeling so nostalgic now 1

* also the Pop Art cosmic costume party with aerial love feed [rockethouse], mahogany & bunsen honeydew. rockethouse were among nyuc's best bands of the past 10 years. re-unite 1

dec 3 1994 club expo in times square [now club new york] was one of the most popular saturday nights in autumn 1994.
* afterwards late night eating up to the famous skyyline coffee shoppe on lexington/75th st for a cinnamon raisin bagel and a coffee with half & half. after 40+ years as a nyc institution, skyyline closed a few years ago & is now a StarWich :(

dec 7 1994 disco 2000 at limelight was 1 of the best parties weekly. on the 7th Killing Joke headlined with a powerful set. best song; "Change." kenny kenny hosted. george wayne from paper attended, as well as jenny brunt, a gorgeous brunette model of the day.

dec 8 1994 i saw nine inch nails on the downward spiral tour. marilyn manson & jim rose circus show in support! hi-lites on NIN's strong arena set: war of the pigs. wish. down in it. head like a hole. hurt. joy div's dead souls. and closer. excellent arena show.
* afterwards over to club USA on west 47th st with dr janet guss. the same day howard stern had talked a bridge suicide jumper out of taking his life.

dec 9 1994 my first visit to don hills club in soho!! diana balton & I went together for dj wayne/jayne county. guest incl. dave deluca and ivan walters. top tune sympathy for the devil.
* i had a slice of pizza for lunch at mimi's on 84th/lex. and a late night bagel at H&H bagel on west 80th st. among the city's best pizza & bagels both.

dec 13 1994 I had my birthday party #1 at bowles/sorokko galleries on west broadway where i was assistant director at the time. then down to the knitting factory with randy fx for american music club, a somewhat under-rated & forgotten US alt-rock act of the day.

dec 14 1994 birthday party #2 at johns pizza on bleeecker st. birthday wishes from janet guss, nicole garrison of morrizine, steve erdman, alan barcoff, jane pinkus,jeff lynch, randy fx, diana balton & dj medusa.

dec 16 1994 birthday party #3 at the tunnel on west 27th st. an American Models agency party brought out a great group of guests incl. christy turlington, seal, bridget hall & patrician brunette ralph lauren model saffron. I took several pics of turly and bridget & i stayed til 530 with great techno music all night long. a very memorable birthday/holiday party!

dec 17 birthday party #4/xmas party at jeffrey slonim's townhouse. guests incl alison moore & diana balton. jeff now writes for the ny post & hamptons. we watched 'grey gardens' on vhs; top songs 'we are family," psych furs 'heaven.' & some B-52's.

dec 19 1994 more xmas parties: bowles/soroko gallery on west broadway/prince where i was assistant director. our xmas dinner was at Boom! in soho. too much red wine, too much blood ;) then over to SOB's on varick for the afro-brasilian world music soundtrack. as work xmas parties go this was one of the most fun & tasteful i ever experienced. soho in the early-mid-90s a wondeful time to be there :)

dec 22 1994 another xmas party thsi time at supper club on west 43rd st. guests incl dr janet guss. top song' ini kamoze here comes the hotstepper.
* and shopping at giorgio armani on madison 66th/67th with my brother I bought a navy blue armani black label cravatte with small white rosettes. this was armani's first madison ave flagship, a tall townhouse that later housed Versace.

dec 31 1994 new years eve the infamous "Heaven" rave on long island city queens. juan atkins spun a powerful tech house set. it was a fun if kooky rave; then like 1230 the cops burst in turned the lights on & busted the rave. another disapoppointing new years eve & another nail in teh coffin of nyc's rave scene- which has never returned to its optimistic vibe of the early mid 1990s.

the best photo show I saw in dec 1994 was robert frank & hiroshi sugimoto at lawrence miller in soho.

favourite music in dec 1994 incl new order's greatest hits. and the vinyl james bond soundtrack 'the living daylights' with the pretenders + johnny marr!

other fave food spots in dec 1994 incl M&O deli sandwiches on western prince st, mimi's for pizza on 84th/lex; skyyline coffee shoppe lex/75th 24 hours for bagels/brunch. iammo bello on 60thy betw park/madison for pasta & salad. and soupburg lex/80th for sandwiches & brunch. & the original green kitchen on 1st & 77th for french fries.

our end of year 1994 Awards show. This show was filmed on December 20, 1994 as I ran down the best in Music, Media & Culture for 1994.

Here are some of the categories & the bands featured in each:

Best 45 of 1994: my favourite singles of the year were: Suede's "Stay Together," St. Etienne's "Like a Motorway," Morrissey's "The More You Ignore me the closer I Get," Blur's "Girls & Boys," and the Jesus & Mary Chain's "Sometimes Always." Youn cant argue with that group of bands, as the last 12 years have shown !

LP of the Year: I selected Suede's "Dog Man Star," Blur's "Parklife," Morrissey's "Vauxhall & I," St Etienne's "Tiger Bay," and the JAMC's "Stoned & Dethroned." Again, Classics all !!


Bands of the Year:
* I chose Blur & Suede.
** Kurt Cobain's April 8 suicide loomed large over the music events of the year, and this episode includes the NY Times famous front-page obituary of Kurt, "Hesitant Poet of Grunge Rock." I have a tee shirt purchased in spring 1994 of this NY Times Kurt Pg. 1 I'll have to wear some time soon!

Concert of the Year: My top gig of 1994 was the Lemonheads at Roseland with Courtney Love playing 3 encore songs just months after Kurt's suicide. My other favourites were Blur & Pulp together at the Academy, St Etienne & Ivy at Limelight, St Etienne & American Music Club at Manhattan Centre, & Oasis & Ivy at Wetlands. Look at those bands live in NYC in 1994!!

Event of the Year: OJ Simpson was the top tabloid story of 1994. Randy selected "Music" itself as the top media event of 1994.
Let's note that TWELVE years later, OJ is Still front page headlines as his recent FOX TV show & Regan books cancellations show....

nov 4, 2004 tony humphries celebrated his birthday at his discoteque 19th st. weekly residence. i dont even think discoteque is open in 2009, 19th st off of 5th ave.

nov 5 2004 DJ Vibe from Portugal & the low end specialists were at spirit. LES played a great progressive opening set & Vibe's tribal tech couldnt quite compete this night- usually Vibe is among the best in the world. spirit's crowd was abysmal & guido/nj as always **1/2 of 5 stars . spririt's been closed a couple of years now after several chelsea deaths. vibe comes to ny about 2 times yearly, he's still among my top 5 or so djs.

nov 6 2004 the death of fashion was at piano's. does anyone still go to piano's

nov 11 2004 larry tee's outsider fest at crobar, an amazing gathering of electronic & house styles. guests incl christine ruggiero, amanda lepore, rupaul and ARE Weapons. first in the reed room: shiela e the glamorous life. then the glimmers & whitey spun hot club sets in the main room. junior vasquez came on at 2 am & kickstarted the night into house overdrive. top tunes incl tamyra grey raindrops will fall. destinys lose my breath. ellis d hands off. cece peniston a deeper love. morales' how wld u feel. do it properly. nasty girl. all 3 rooms were great all night & it was a fun & flamboyant mix like limelight or tunnel in the 90s. one of my best club nights of 2004 **** of 5 stars. many of the acts larry booked that night were electro, but it was a tougher and funkier version they the weak-poppy-ish electro one hears in 2009. in fact electro is sometimes a bad word in 2009. junior was glorious in crobar's big room. now it's m2, i have never gone.
* the same night interpol was at hammerstein ballroom touring their antics LP. arcade fire was at bowery ballrm. when they release lps, both bands still have cre4dibility into 2010.

nov 12 2004 sander kleinenberg was at crobar. and interpol played an impressive 2nd night at hammerstein. Mr X hosted a duran duran tribute night at luke/leroy.

nov 13 2004 nick marc celebrated his birthday at tiswas at don hills with royston langdon's new band perfornming. in 2006 royston is back with Arc Kid & some are predicting his music career does have a second act. actually if spacehog was even a 1st act, there was no second act. and liv tyler split from royston and moved to la with baby milo.
* the same night the damnwells were at mercury lounge, one of the most under-rated nyc rock bands of the 21st century. juliette lewis was at tribeca grand. i have loved every damnwells cd ive bought on amazon - why are many of americas best bands totally obscure

nov 24, 2004 steve lawler & danny tenaglia were at the roxy for thanksgiving eve. lawler stole the show with last nite a dj saved my life, elements, lil mo yin yang 'reap,' and a new mix of trisco's muzak. lawler's tribal & progg house totally beat DT's techy house [incl be yourself], and it was an excellent thanksgiving eve blowout. ****1/4+ of 5 stars on the night . how many djs can blow away dt in his own city. a very shortlist but steve lawlers on it.
* the same night, infected mushroom were getting lovely at avalon. psy-trance ... still going haha. avalon - a shopping mall, mthey say

nov 25 2004 paul oakenfold hosted trancegiving at crobar. okaey now p[lays las vegas almost each week at rain. im gonna be sick.

nov 26 2004 erick morillo was throwing down to a packed house at crobar. and justine d was at lit, a residence which ended earlier in 2006. justine has been busy in the kitchen lately. morillo co-owns pacha - his sets have been declining yearly.

nov 27 2004 roger sanchez was at crobar. evan dando was at maxwells in hoboken. and kid america was at lit. sanchez- one of the few big room djs i still rate.

favourite cds in nov 2004 incl pavements crooked rain deluxe reissue. st etienne's travel edition greatest hits. the reissue of jobraith's early 70s glam pop LP. just got pavements 2006 reissue of wowee zowee its their best LP imo.

nov 4 1999 beavher at don hills with guests evan dando, parker posey, carmen kass, courtney taylor from dandy warhols, donno & nigel from nancy boy, & anthony langdon. top tunes from frank incl more than a woman, do the hustle, set if off, into the groove, spirit in the sky, you sexy thing & like a virgin. ****+ of 5 stars.

nov 5 1999 carl cox played an ultimate base night at twilo. Ive heard a lot of djs in my 30 years clubbing, but carl cox is definitely among the top 3 of all time, and never moreso than at his late 90s twilo super sets, 6-8 hours of pummeling techno & groovy house UN-BEAT-A-BLE !!!! his nov. 2009 cielo housey set was good, but didnt really explode into the techno or disco mania i hoped for.

nov 6 1999 tiswas was at don hills every saturday night, 11/6 was the 4th anniversary with fictura, damned personals & the inflateable men. FICTURA's set: over the moon. always. love walks away. perfume. just like you. starlet. telephone high. money man. / havana. nick's choons incl suede electricity, jb brand new bag, i cant explain, bigmouth, & all day & all of the night . nick bring back michael lamorte & damn personals in 2010 !!!!

nov 11 1999 pet shop boys were at hammerstein ballroom. attendees incl justine d, ron m & nancianne from staten. I love the psb but i HATED this show !!! the music was flat & canned & the absurd attempt at post-modern theatrical stagecraft lent the night a deadly, ridiculous [in the worst way] boredom & self-inflicted horridness.
here are some of the great songs the psb butchered that night: west end girls. being boring. se a vida e. its only the wind. what have i done to deserve this? can you forgive her? always on my mind. its a sin. i dont know what you want but were not gonna give it 2 ya tonight. its alright. nyc boy. go west. ** of 5 stars I am as big a PSB song fan as you will meet im obsessed but they were SHIIT in concert!! i have never seen them since, but i still love their music.
* next up to bar 13 for michael T & alex english's Broadcast party. only decent tunes were buffalo stance. i want candy & safety dance. left in less than 30 mins. * of 5 stars.

nov 25 thanksgiving trancegiving at the roxy. a perfecto night with paul oakenfold & dave ralph & hybrid with a live PA. 1999 was paul oakenfold's magic year, as his BBC essential mixes attest. top tune this night was utah saints 'this is not a love song.' Ive been clubbing for 30+ years but this trancegiving debut night and set by oakey at the roxy was among the greatest nights of music Ive ever heard since my first concert in 1971. the music, the vibe, the rave event at the roxy, with oakey at the absolute peak of his skills..... *****+ of 5 stars one of the greatest club nights of my life !!!!!!

sept 2, 2004 orange park was at sin e. tony humphries was holding down his thursday residence at discoteque on 19th st. orange park was 1 of ny's best bands 5 years ago but disbhanded after 2 indie lps. hopefully tony will play nyc more often, he's one of the most important names in us house music since the 80s.

9/3/04 suicide headlined rothko with a rare 21st century nyc appearance. suicide is arguably the most important us electro punk band ever, and still criminally under-appreciated. I was lucky enough to see suicide open up for the ramones at the palladium jan. 7, 1978. Im sure a few of you wish you could have been there.

sept 4, 2004 sander kleinenberg & steve porter played an excellent hard house/progressive house night at crobar, both djs on top form. hi-lites from sandy: blur song 2 [hard house mix] ; doors' riders on the storm [dance mix] . among 3 best sander sets Ive been at. ****1/4 of 5 stars. my review the day after;

straight to the main room. whoa it was packed! prob as many people as any crobar nyc ive been to. For a summer saturday of long weeknd crowd it was a GOOD crobar crowd! face it crobar is a more 'grown up' club than most in nyc. and i dont mean in a snooty 'fashionista-apprentice-bottles' way- I mean there are people older than 20! most of them!! and its a dressier crowd! thats more POLITE than many clubs! [hello discotq & spirit!!]. that actually came out to have FUN not beefs. that can still drink up , disco down and NOT be extra-mangled AND still look good! there are some foxy women at crobar & generally everyone dresses nice. even the mooks had their style-game on [stencil sleeveless tees? cool for YOU!!] and i repeat there were sm babes! steve porter up. LOVE the crobar dj on stage set up! [the old 'skybox' perch was distant & cold].
listen i LIKE steve porter!! in fact after LES Id say hes the best '2nd tier' NYC dj. [meaning about-to-break- but not of DT/jnr-morales-morillo-fame yet].
OK steves set- half instrumental club bangers. sm dirty basslines. sm proggy cool neo-disco. a few sweet-vocal-sander-style funky tracks. -
also some kinda aimless drifty wanna-be progg snoozers that didnt do much but fill time. SO as an OPENING DJ I think Steve did well- in fact he was banging it out from 1-2 as sander loomed.
in fact that was a pretty jumping opening set and sander dug it [in fact 1-2 times during sanders set, porter took over for 1-2 songs while sander refilled that vodka-cranberry rider on stage]
2 am sanders on. the most cheerful ive ever seen him, well at least since arc anyway. the most connecting with crowd ive seen him.
I LOVED SANDERS SET!
2-3 am- progressive dirty bass bangers with an occasional sweet-pop-hyper-female vocal- listen sander can MIX!!!! he can blend or he can BANG!! the next tune in but hes in control of his records & I LOVE the way he programs! TALENT!! arc-fans note- sander's 2-3 set was VERY-Howells-like- dirty bass & sm funky yet poppy hooks.
3-4 am- this was the core of sanders set. ok the sound was a little 'progressive trance.' in fact he was pumping like 5-10 'trance' tracks- Which I LIKE from sander! melodic- dramatic- ethereal- and still the occasional hard bottom/ tuff beat-- by 120 mins + into sanders set I was having a ball!! met a cool couple from St Pete Fla. dancing with the fellow-sander-porter maniacs at the railing- chilling on the speaker- saw a few arc-heads - I was into sanders progg melodic trance! NOT CHEESE! - QUALITY!!!
the crowd was with him all the way! fist-pumping! drumrolls & crescendoes!
by 4 am i was saying I am loving this set as much as my fave arc sander set- do u remeber april 2003 at arc?? when sander seemed to reach a new level in nyc with the flow and cinematic buildup of the dirty bass & emotive trance climaxes?? sander did it again last night! I was loving it & the crowd was still in the game.

4-5 am. Sander switched styles. he went to a harder techy-house cum-tribal sound...the man can mix BUT tribal bottoms are NOT sanders forte! he needs some of those lawler-type piledriving basslines in there! NOT a pots/pans tribal! sander lost the flow i felt & was just banging for its own sake. the crowd thinned- i was up front & the archeads were still present but i was one of the few STILL juming up & down! still a cute crowd, still a classy club night but sander lost it towards 5 am. porter took over a bit. more of his warm up tracks...the pace slackened. sander came back for a few more progg bangers but the tribal/tech section from 4-5 had cut a hole in the crowd.

i left sweaty semi-mangled but still glowing. some great people in the crobar staff. many great clubbers on this holiday weekend jam. some absolutely awesome tunes from 1 am -4-ish.
I will be back next time sander plays crobar. i love his funky-pop-disco vocals & the epic progg trance climaxes. but his tribal-tech style isnt sanders strength- he's a melodicist & a disco demon at heart- and overall between music & crowd experience

sept 17, 2004 Danny tenaglia headlined the roxy with danny howells opening. both worldclass djs played techno sets with howells being particularly cold. shameful when these 2 artists can play some of the best house music on earth. v. disappointing. its ok in 2008-09 both dt and howells too have p[loayede several brilliant deep house sets - and very moderne too 11

sept 21, 2004 the prodigy returned with their first studio cd since 1997, 'always outnumbered never outgunned.' while 97's fat of the land was an earth shaking funky techno pop lp that went #1 in usa & rocked the world, the 2004 lp was nearly a dud with leaden beats & over-busy arrangements compatred to liam's brilliant 90s pop riffs & hooks. v. disappointing . anjd their most recent lp was more of the same ; big in euro festivals, no more in usa ciao 1

sept 23, 2004. beavher at don hill's frankie's pioneering 80s night. by autumn 2004 beavher had just about run its course after 10 mostly great years. the best beavher's were in the mid-late 90s & it was all downhill from there. on the 23rd guests incl. vito, becca, christy, angelo, and jeff from NJ. best trax were B52's roam, cure inbetween days & diana im coming out. there was no energy & i left at 1:45. gave ritchie birkenhead the trojan soulful reagge cd as i left. bartender big bob's stories about the kinks & the cramps were prob the highlights of the night. well besides diana ross. **1/4 of 5 stars, its definitely not 1996 anymore. 5 years later i dont think frank spins beav in nyc / well maybe in 2010 . we shall see.

sept 24, 2004 junior vasquez was still at discoteque every friday, a residence that lasted for the summer and autumn of 2004, but was done by year's end. sadly so, it was a rare opportunity to hear the nyc house master himself in an intimate setting with experimental sets weekly. hopefully both junior & danny tenaglia will bring back their intimate weeklies in 2007, DT has promised as much.....jnr at cielo is really good, i went in early 2009 and i hope to make it again by 09/10.

I think maxie is about to break through to the top echelon of worldwide djs after 5 years bubbling under on every taste-makers playlist. in the last year MG has had hit remixes of yes, coldplay & justin, and max's next hit may be the one to put him on the charts. max's sullivan set was a winner in spring 09. hopefully he return soon / 1

I paid $2000 for 1st row orchestra pit tix- much closer than 1st row orchestra its literally less than a yard from moz's stagelip. the artist elizabeth peyton was feet away from me also. It was the best concert I saw in 2004 & one of the 20 or so best concerts of my 38 years seeing concerts. the setlist: first of the gang to die. bigmouth strikes again. november,. i like you. crashing bores. the more you ignore me. let me kiss you. forgiven jesus. how soon is now. irish blood. never played symphonies. rubber ring. daddys voice. now my heart is full. last night i dreampt. subway train/everyday is like sunday. you know i couldnt last. encore: there is a light.
the only moz-related shows that were better than this one were: the smiths meat is murder at the beacon 1st night. moz at the beacon 2/29/00. and moz's 1992 paramount your arsenal show was about as great as radio city overall. ****3/4 of 5 stars. perhaps the best event i attended club or concert wise in 2004.

august 7, 1999 body & soul, the legendary disco/R&B/house sunday party from vinyl in tribeca hosted its annual summerstage saturday open-air afternoon disco jam. even in the bright scorching sunlight, the sisters & brothers got down to the musical stylings of francois K, joe claussel, and danny krivit. all 3 djs played superbly with their garage and disco classics, a mega-mix of dan hartman's relight my fire [re-edit/12" version of course!] was the top tune but the whole day was splendid & upful. *** of 5 stars.
* the same night aimee mann was at tramps, make sure you pick up her 90s CDs whatever & Im with stupid - you wont find any singer-songwriter LPs better than those from the last decade or so.

august 11, 1999 Fuzzy from Boston headlined the mercury lounge with brilliantine & sleepyhead in support. of all the 90s USA alt-college-rock almost-was/obscure bands, Fuzzy might be my favourite- a Lemonheads spin-off band fronted by 2 gorgeous ladies & great songwriters. Their 'electric juices' on warners is one of the 90s great lost LPs. set at merc: glad again. dead end day. true colors. neil young. summers gone. gave into it. are you living. set my sights. rock song. flashlight. flies. and encore: best song, my request, a cover of the beach boys girl dont tell me. *** of 5 stars.

nov 19 1994 I curated an art gallery show, Pierre-Marie Brisson at the Bowles-Sorokko gallery on west broadway in soho. the genius director robert altman attended.

nov 23 1994 Disco 2000 at Limelight, a special pre-Thanksgiving blow-out with Orbital!! fabulous night . 15 years later orbital is back on the uk rave/festival circuit. the brown and orange lps will always be their best.

nov 24 1994 my first vegetarian thankgiving. 15 years later ive never looked back, i will be vegetarian for the rest of my life.

nov 29 1994 jackie 60 every tuesday at Mother on west 14th street. guests incl mike renchiwich, kitty boots, miss guy, lady bunny, johnny dynell. the popular MFer party got its start at Mother in the late 1990s. meat packing has changed so much in the 21st century. mpd now is mostly cielo [coxy thurs] and sometimes kiss and fly. 1oak...umm.

nov 30 1994 disco 2000 at limelight, the infamous debauched freak-a-delic wednesday night weekly feat. michael alig, richie rich, keoki, astro earl, james st james, mykul tronn, heather summerfield, and so many more glam scenesters. you realize that nightlife doesnt exist in ny and phila in 2009 compared to a party like disco 2000. rent 'party monster' and 'kids' it was muuuucchh wilder.

oct 2, 1999 tiswas was at don hill's with DC's anne summers headlining, an excellent pop/rock/alternative band that hopefully nick will bring back to nyc in 2006/07. sky rocket opened. guests incl. kathleen #1 & #2, & john mooney. top choons from nick's tables incl: papas got a brand new bag, midnight confessions, magnificent 7, I feel good, fools gold 1994, william, trash, jumping jack flash, panic, my generation, sex machine, taxman, heart of glass & stepping stone. ***1/2 of 5 stars.

oct 6, 1999 ON! at life each wednesday night, "move makers & tambourine shakers, the times are changin!" with guest diana balton. mooney suzuki & damned personals performed. top tunes I wanna be adored, shes so high, 2000 light years, bigmouth, fire & I love rock n roll. ***1/2 of 5 stars.
* earlier that night i attended jenna joost's film program at anthology film archives. experimental films incl tim leary be-in & james vanderbeek.

oct 7, 1999 echo & the bunnymen were at irving plaza. setlist: rescue. crocodiles. 7 seas. bring on dancing horses. the back of love. the cutter. killing moon. lips like sugar. do it clean. villiers terrace. over the wall. good show, ***3/4 of 5 stars,
but not a patch on the echo shows i saw in 1982 at peppermint lounge [heaven up here], 1983 roseland [never stop/porcupine], and 1984 savoy [ocean rain].
the 1983 show is one of the 10 best concerts ive seen in 35 years of gigs, and the 1984 show is in my top 20 ever.
as far as i can recall, the 3 best live bands in the 80s were the smiths, echo & bunnymen & the jam, and I was lucky enough to see all of them on every american tour they played nyc in 80s.

oct 21 1999 check out this itinerary: started out the night at culture club [!] for the opening night of justine d's short-lived Trans-Am party. guests incl alec from 99X & hostess penelope tuesdae. *1/2 of 5 stars. also went back at 4 am & it still sucked.
* next to idlewild for the 3rd night of 'magic touch' another party that flopped within weeks. top tune 'the soulful strut.' 1/2* of 5 stars.

sept 3, 1999 john acquaviva headlined at sound factory. SF is now called pacha and its 46th street location makes it a more comfortable address than the beleagured 'wild' west 20s in chelsea.

sept 4 and 5, 1999 godspeed you black emperor and la bradford played mercury lounge. now residing in the 'where are they now? file'.

sept 8, 1999 back at ON! at club life. guests incl. dj voodooru, ed, scott & anna from nj, justine d, art dealer william acquavella with steve wynn [!], jimmy destri from blondie, & alex english. dj nick marc's electrifying sounds of NOW! incl: mr big stuff, sympathy for the devil, iron man, fire, cherry bomb, school's out, taxman, saturday in the park [!], fools gold, how soon is now, shes so high, & charlies' weirdo. stayed til 3:15. ***1/2 of 5 stars . that's a pretty powerful cross-genre/generations mix of choonage & guess what? when making time is at pure, russ & gregg bring it all back home :)))

sept 9, 1999 karen finlay headlined lust for life at Life. after a couple of great years on bleecker st, life was closed due to noise & traffic complaints by the greenwich village neighbourhood board. its the city's crackdown on nightlife in other neighborhoods that led to the concentration of clubs in the west 20s in chelsea, especially west 27th st. of course moving all the new licences to west 20s eventually resulted in the 'wild west' environment there incl. several notorious murders nearby in 2006. although Ive enjoyed crobar a lot since it opened like 2003, there is a very different atmosphere in that area lately, and the constant police presence & surveillance makes for an ominous nighttime experience. 3 years later the area is a ghosttown with crobar/mezmor/mansion closed as well as guesthouse, BED, and spirit. the only constant is change.

sept 16, 1999 the chemical brothers rocked hammerstein ballroom touring their excellent surrender LP. paul oakenfold opened up with an hour set of his more pop-flavoured dance tracks. outside hurricane floyd was battering us with heavy rain but inside it was big beats all night incl. hey boy hey girl, music:response, doesnt matter, under the influence, out of control, setting sun, leave home & closing with the private psychedelic reel. in their heyday the chems were a fierce live act to be reckoned with, one of the more energetic & theatrical dance acts. their star seems to have dimmed somewhat in the 21st century but I understand they still turn it up to 11 in the live arena. **** of 5 stars. its funny the chems have faded from the big picture & oakey sold out & lives in LA & vegas instead of england. once again, 10 years later in the dance scene, a seismic shift.

sept 18, 1999 i attended the opening of 'club 151' at 151 east 51st street. diana balton was my guest, and we generously partook of the open bar all night long, waitress service too! guests incl alex lind rose and host marc biron. now 151 is known as nikki beach, and is still holding it down with some big events incl recent MTV awards & fashion week parties. 3 years later does anyone even go to Nikki Beach in ny except jocks? Nikki Beach in SouthBeach still gets down on the sand.

oct 2, 1999 anne summers from wash dc played tiswas with sky rocket opening. of all the loads of bands that played tiswas in the last decade, Id have to say that anne summers was one of the best, a tuneful alt-pop act with great melodies & sweet singing. I picked up 2 of their cds this night & they are real gems of 90s usa po-mo pop-rock.

a favourite film in sept 1999 was albert brooks' the muse,' with sharon stone. I just picked up brooks' "looking for comedy in the muslim world" a somewhat under-appreciated 2006 comedy.

HQ was at pianos. and junior vasquez was holding down his intiomate friday residency at discoteque, 1 of 2004's best weeklies- while it lasted!! JR's a cielo resident in 2009; and kerri moved to westchester & started a family.

august 7, 2004 the everyothers were at rothko. I hope you have picked up their 'pink sticky lies' EP on kill rock stars- or even better their debut LP- the EO were prob my favorite NY band of the 21st century.

august 19 2004 guided by voices and ambulance ltd played a great double bill on west 13th st & the hudson river . GBV stands as one of the best bands USA produced since in the last 20 years. ambulance havbe taken 6+ years for a 2nd LP; wassup ?!

august 28, 2004 roger sanchez was at crobar. S-Man had nyc's best radio show imo 'release yourself' every friday latenight on WKTU 3-5 am. and his bi-monthly crobar residence gave us at least 3 of 2006's best NYC house sets. sanchez- total worldwide house superstar.

august 7, 1999 body & soul, the legendary disco/R&B/house sunday party from vinyl in tribeca hosted its annual summerstage saturday open-air afternoon disco jam. even in the bright scorching sunlight, the sisters & brothers got down to the musical stylings of francois K, joe claussel, and danny krivit. all 3 djs played superbly with their garage and disco classics, a mega-mix of dan hartman's relight my fire [re-edit/12" version of course!] was the top tune but the whole day was splendid & upful. *** of 5 stars.
* the same night aimee mann was at tramps, make sure you pick up her 90s CDs whatever & Im with stupid - you wont find any singer-songwriter LPs better than those from the last decade or so.

august 11, 1999 Fuzzy from Boston headlined the mercury lounge with brilliantine & sleepyhead in support. of all the 90s USA alt-college-rock almost-was/obscure bands, Fuzzy might be my favourite- a Lemonheads spin-off band fronted by 2 gorgeous ladies & great songwriters. Their 'electric juices' on warners is one of the 90s great lost LPs. set at merc: glad again. dead end day. true colors. neil young. summers gone. gave into it. are you living. set my sights. rock song. flashlight. flies. and encore: best song, my request, a cover of the beach boys girl dont tell me. *** of 5 stars.

8/12 magic touch was a short-lived soul revival weekly at idlewild/white rabbit. and frank's beavher was over at don hill's the original 80s revival night.

8/13 factory fridays: UK garage at 222 lounge on 14th st. there's always been a uk speed garage element to my partying.....
& the legendary squeezebox was at don hill's with mistress formika + dj miss guy. To some people squeezebox is a movie. for some of us it was one of the best rock & roll parties in nyc of the last 30 years.

august 4 1994 the USS Intrepid battleship on the west side pier at about 40th street was a popular party setting. it was cool to hang out on the giant top aircraft carrier deck of the boat, and sip summer cocktails as the hudson river breeze blew across the deck. inside the ship there was a dancing area but it was kind of claustrophobic & a bit briney/fishy smelling, but it had a cool subterranean/nautical vibe all the same. guests incl super model/victoria's secret pin up frederique van der wahl [at the time one of the most beautiful wonmen I had ever met], john flanagan, ex-owner of southampton's tavern, and dr janet linda guss. i wore the smiths strangeways tee, a button down ralph lauren peat-green pinstripe polo, and ripped/shredded levis. and YES it was a totally great party & no party Im aware of in summer 2009 has been nearly this good !!! An aircraft carrier for fuck's sake !

august 5,6, & 7: 1994 I visited my brother & his wife elizabeth on fire island & we went dancing at the Monster disco in the Pines!!
* AND the Video re-cap from my 1994 TV show "the Weather Report": the weekend of July 6 and 7, 1994 I visited my brother & his wife Elizabeth at their home on beautiful Fire Island. The weather was magnificent as you can see on my TV show "the Weather Report" as we sit on the beach by the water soaking up rays. The atmosphere in Fire Island was considerably looser, freer, & more active than Main Beach, more of a singles scene & lots of volleyball & hotty girls & boys in skimpy swimwear hooking it up. You could probably say that Fire island is the closest that NY state has to the anything-goes, body-beautiful beaches of Miami, thankfully Long Island is still a bit more subdued than the near-insanity/lawlessness that rules on South Beach, as some of us have experienced in recent years. As much as we can remember of South Beach, if you catch my drift.
My brother & I host a Weather Report segment on the beach, commenting on the 8/8/94 New York magazine, stories include Tom Snyder, & Kate Moss again! The NY Yankees in the NY Times, Howard Stern for Governor in Long Island Newsday [Howie is of course a Long Island native], Lisa Marie Presley's recent marriage to Michael Jackson [!!!], and James Dean in the NY Times Book Review. The weather & beach energy is spectacular on Fire Island, and along with the hotties playing volleyball & swimming in the blue Atlantic Ocean, my brother & I finish off the show with about 7 minutes of frisbee playing & I think youll agree the visual aesthetic/athletic contrast against the gorgeous blue water is pretty intense.


august 18 1994 I saw LUSH at the manhattan center, 7th floor ballroom i guess? obvs shoe-gazing and britpop was 1 of the hottest sounds at this time; LUSH's set incl 'for love' and 'sweetness & light.' miki & louise were a gorgeous pair of front-people but make no mistake, LUSH could rock out live with bouncy rhythms & sheets of feedback- the early 90s were a brilliant era for shoegaze bands like ride, mbv, spiritualized, and lush- and they definitely could play it all live. support from WEEZER! in one of their first nyc dates. and throneberry !!!! another GREAT night of music espec LUSH whom I enjoyed a few other times live around this era. Bet you wish YOU saw weezer in 94!

august 23 1994 I saw the film BARCELONA by whit stillman with janet at the carniegie hall theatre. is that theatre closed now?? Barcelona is an attractive, inoffensive personality setpiece, but Stillman's "Metropolitan" is far better- and an under-appreciated recolection of Manhattan's prep school scene circa 1975-1980.

winx was actually GREAT! fluid is a small/medium size place maybe 2/3 as big as shadow. great sound & air condition. josh plays there every last weds of each month, he lives in phila. In six months ive been in phila he played by far the most forward & future music of any dj Ive heard here. he started with some hard progressive that was cool. then he went into some tech house that got the crowd dancing. there were maybe 80-100 people there he said it was slow but i thought it was comfy & perfect. by midnight he was into peak tunes and he played hard techno! at least an hour and his crowd loved it screaming and cheering the hardest dancing. around one he played more housey but it was still closer to tech house. by 130-145 it was emptying out so i went over to him & took two pics !! Im actually excited to see these cos club people like u know that winx is actually really famous in our world. so a very cool phila party & his techno was awesome, very "now" at least as good as danny howells techno side maybe better. his mixing is fantastic his transitions are on the money 100% not 1 fuck-up all night
guests incl dave P. best song 'everything in its place.' josh played techno progg & house, masterfully. stayed 11 - 2 am. ***1/4

dr beach from Fla Univ rated Southampton's Cooper's Beach #4 in USA & East Hampton Main Beach #6 in the nation . I should be on main beach in about 3 days.

july 1, 1999 the realistics played the bounce at the cooler. neither the band nor the venue exist anymore . the cooler used to be in the merat packing district: no one in 1999 would recognize 2009's loungey MPD.

july 8, 1999 paul oakenfold headlined a slamming perfecto night at vinyl in tribeca with dave ralph opening up. a decade latyer, Oakey hasnt even played nyc in a year, and his sets are generally a shadow of his past greatness. He did play Atlantic City about a month ago. Oakey in AC? maybe that's a good match at this point.

july 11, 1999 i was in east hampton and attended a tea dance at club NV [later Resort, now lily pond] with sammy krips on north main street/three mile harbor road. top tunes were cher's believe, chic everybody dance, and dan hartman relight my fire.
* I also ran into vendela the stunning swedish supermodel as I was walking to main beach & she was riding her bike east from georgica on ocean ave.
* some other top spots summer 1999 on the east end of LI included conscience point with billy masterson hosting, flying point in southampton with danny A, jet east, and life at the tavern with the von broock twins. a decade later, every one of those club's names & promoters have changed: I would not go clubbing on nthe east enmd except in very rare cases.

july 17, 1999 the Cyber-Tek rave at Roseland, with an extra-ordinary techno set from sweden's cari liekebusch vs. adam beyer. I rated this rave ****3/4 of 5 stars. it was 1 of the best parties of 1999, 1 of the best raves I ever attended, and the liekebusch vs beyer techno set is also one of the best dj sets I heard in the 1990s. In fact a decade later, I will say that their dj set ranks in the top 5 techno sets Ive ever heard live, all the others would be carl cox sets.

july 31, 1999 the tvt/waxtrax mastermix tour with juan atkins, dj hurricane, expansion union, the crystal method & frontside at irving plaza. unfortunately the erratic but preternaturally takented majic juan didnt show for the date, but i rocked out to the method. great to see ben from tvt also in the house

august 1, 1999 my brother took me to see bruce springsteen at the meadowlands in e rutherford nj. it was a pretty good show with hi-lites 'back streets' [opening song!!] and encore 'born to run,' and jimmy cliff's trapped, and the ties that bind. but since i saw springsteen at the palladium in 1976 on born to run, and at the garden in 78 on darkness, 1980 on the river, and born in the usa at meadowlands in 1984, a 1999 springsteen show just aint the same, baby. ***3/4 stars. the 76 & 78 concerts are among the 10 or 20 greatest shows ive ever seen in 35 years of concert-going & seeing virtually every top rock band in that era.

On! at Club Life on bleecker st was one of the most happening weeklies in ther summer of 1999

a popular film in july 1999 was 'the astronaut's wife,' with johnny depp & charlize theron.

the songwriter bobby troupe died at 80. he wrote 'route 66' which is an all-time classic by nat king cole, and for me, as covered by the rolling stones with brian jones, is my single favourite recording ever by the stones, especially as heard live on "december's' children" LP.

and 35 years before, the beach boys had their first ..1 hit in july 1964 with 'i get around.'

july 8 1994 i saw the lemonheads at roseland touring 'come on feel the lemonheads.' this is the lergendary night when courtney love came out at the encore and sang 2 hole songs playing guitar with evan dando on drums. kurt cobain had killed himself in april, this was courtney's first musical appearance since then & to say the crowd welcomed her with an intense outpouring of love & acceptance is a huge understatement. not to mention the subtext that couirtney's affair with evan dando led to her separation from kurt in early 1994, but that's all in the nirvana books you might want to read. hi-lites of lemonhead's set: shame about ray. ride with me. favourite t. down about it. my drug buddy. into your arms. great big no. big gay heart. confetti. rudderless. you cant take it with you. dawn cant decide. alisons starting to happen. its about time. style. frank mills. // courtney encores: Im miss world, doll parts. july 11 1994 the country club on 86th st was an unlikely yet happening preppy monday night party.

july 23 1994 juliana hatfield played central park summerstage with holland's bettie serveert opening. it was a rainy afternoon but by the time juliana came on the rain had abated & she was pretty popular at this point, some even called her the female pin up/object of affection in the usa alt-pop scene. I must confess I had a bit of a crush on her myself, and i chatted with her a bit backstage; however best julia chat i ever had was at mercury lounge i think when speed mcqueen was playing. her speaking voice is even cuter than her singing, its so breathy chirpy & alluring. hi-lites at summerstage incl my sister, no idols & the solo encore of 'nirvana,' once again her song about listening to kurt cobain, ["Ive got nirvana in my head/ Im so gald Im not dead/ here comes that song, I love it so much, makes me wanna fuuck shiit up"]. you may recall kurt's spectre hung heavily over the us rock scene in the spring & summer of 1994.

july 29, 30, 31, in east hampton, hanging with audrey flack & hannah marcus in georgica, bar hopping at wild rose cafe in bridgehampton, and shooting video on main beach as described in my Weather Report cable TV guide 7/31/94: " we are on Main Beach, East Hampton, reading the Sunday newspapers & discussing them. I'm wearing the Smiths "Shoplifters" tee shirt with Elvis on it. We are also joined by Mimi, a beautiful blonde who was one of our house-guests for the weekend. Topics discussed include the recently-opened Mercury Lounge, the Bowery's revival in the Daily News, & Bill Clinton on the cover of the NY Times Magazine. After the beach we drive on Ocean Avenue and then Main Street East Hampton, with Steely Dan's first LP playing on the stereo, and pass by the UA/Regal cinema, where Forrest Gump & The Mask are 2 very popular summer 1994 films. favourite lps in june 1999 incl jim o'rourke 'eureka.' with a brill cover of bacharach's amazing 'something big.' o'rourke is now a member of sonic youth & christgau in the voice gave SY's latest LP a big rave in this week's edition. sure beats tricia romano's mr. black column...eek. 10 years on christgau & romano both are gone from the Voice & SY just made a good LP :)
