nyc nightlife in may 1999- 10 years ago this month

may 6, 1999 beavher was at coney island high for a few months. BeavHer at Don Hill's was among my favourite 90s NY weeklies.
* and alex english's broadcast party debuted at bar 13. djs like alex english, michael T & voodooru made it a happening scene for a couple of years. In 2009, Hiro's GBH Thursday night is in many ways a descendant of "Broadcast."

may 7, 1999 carl cox headlined twilo with his ultimate base monthly residence. coxy would typically play a 7 or 8 hour set and several of coxy sets in this era rank with the greatest dj sets Ive heard in decades of nightclubbing. and coxy can still do it, his april 2006 crobar set was the best set ive heard that year, the only set I rated ***** of 5 stars this year. And in may 2009 I'll be checking out Coxy at Borgata this week-end. Does he swtyill have it. I would wager- yes!

may 12, 1999 ON! at Club Life on Bleecker Street was 1 of the best parties weekly, every wednesday night with a live band, 60s & BritPop sounds, and excellent lights & special effects. may 12 bebe buell played [former playboy playmate & ford model] and her set included a cover of the UnderTones 'teenage kicks.' guests incl. don hill, justine d, and anna, scott & danny from NJ. top tunes incl. jimi all along the watchtower, beatles daytripper, smiths heaven knows Im miserable, who pictures of lily, blondie maria, stone roses 1 love, grassroots midnight confessions, and the american breed's 'bend me shape me.' ***1/2 of 5 stars.
* the same night mark lewis' amazing new pop jet headlined elbow room with suzy easy score & lucy woodworth supporting & karaoke afterwards.

may 13, 1999 I went to the 2nd night of broadcast, hosted by alex kingsize [alex english], michael T, voodooru & Joe II. top tunes incl carl douglass kung fu fighting, new order ceremony, rod's d'ya think Im sexy, frankie valli grease, and yvonne elliman if I cant have you. *** of 5 stars.

may 20, 1999 broadcast 3rd night with guests justine d, kathleen & jenny from NJ. top tunes DM strangelove, smiths how soon is now, psb west end girls, expose point of no return, eddy grant electric ave, & madonna borderline.
* the same night 'the shout people' presented the bounce at the cooler with the blow ups, aerial love feed & the optic nerve. the bloowups are now harley & the night, and alf is rockethouse - 2 of nyc's greatest 21st century bands, still !!

may 22, 1999 st etienne played irving plaza with kid loco opening up. with the foxbase alpha reissues upcoming, hopefully we'll get the 'Ets back in Philadelphia & NY real soon!!

may 27, 1999 broadcast week 4 with guests keith and chris from staten, michael lamorte, and rui dj-ing. top tunes incl. blondie dreaming, st etienne lose that girl, bowie young americans, suede shes in fashion, beatles sgt pepper. and something by dubstar. ***1/2 of 5 stars.

may 29, 1999 the chemical bros & happy mondays played hammerstein ballroom. best mondays show I ever saw? "From Manchester with love' Sound Factory 1990 !!!

may 30, 1999 memorial day weekend shout! at bar 13 with guests kathleen 1&2, christine, big Bob from don hill's, jenna joost from satchem, LI, and fernando & nancianne from staten. top tunes beatles taxman, sam/dave hold on Im coming, & edwin starr 25 miles ***1/2 of 5 stars.

: Media #21/ Aerobics Workout/ Andy Warhol Museum"

: Media #21/ Aerobics Workout/ Andy Warhol Museum"
"Media 21/Aerobics Workout" a media & video deconstruction show filmed between May 23, 1994, and June 21, 1994.
Here are the main topics & themes

Newspaper Deconstruction: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis had just died, and my Weather Report segment from May 23, 1994 serves as a memorial and tribute to her, using various newspaper images and headlines from the Daily News, the Post, and the Times. The same week, the Andy Warhol Museum had just opened in Pittsburgh, PA, gleaning many newspaper headlines & stories including Liza Minelli, Marilyn, and Brillo in the Village Voice 5/24/94. Warhol's great film "Empire" in the Voice 4/5/94. Ann Landers in the Daily News from 5/16/94 with a banana split headline, On 5/26/94, warhol was on Pg. 1 of the NY Times not for his museum, but because of a huge lawsuit by his estate that his finances had been mis-managed. Patric walker, the NY Post's genius astrologer. The comic Meet Mr. Luckey from the Daily News. Hilton Kramer's NY Times deconstruction "Times Watch" from the Post's editorial pages.

POP Art: besides Andy Warhol stories, quite a few POP art signifiers are featured, including the National Enquirer tabloid's Lucky Blue Dot, a doll & commemorative plate of Elvis Presley from his 1968 comeback special, US stamps incl. roses, pinecones. Snapple Iced Tea including flavours banana nectar, mango, & old fashioned iced tea. A clip from the cable TV show "Grandma's Homemade Cheese" also features Snapple in a bit of a Weather Report symbology double or triple whammy. Spiderman in the Daily News full colour Sunday comic. Iced teas from Tetley & Lipton. Capuccino. A Grizzly bear beer stein! Campbell's soup. Sprite. Seagram's seltzer water. Canada Dry seltzer. The sleeve for Blur's new 45 "Girls & Boys" from Parklife, which wopuld catapult them to superstar status as the year progressed. The Flintstones. Spirit Soap. famous Amos' chocolate chip/pecan cookies.

Aerobics Workout: Probably the highlight of this episode is an aerobics workout led by the gorgeous model & actress Adelita Bonnicci, who was obsessed with working out in the summer of 1994. She was kind enough to lead an aerobics workout session on video for us on the afternoon of 6/17/94, in her skimpy leotard, shaking her stuff to the music of Suede, I think youll agree Adelita truly is a "leotard fantastique" come to life.

Fashion Models/Actresses/Film: This episode highlighted some of the top models of 1994 as seen in W & Harper's Bazaar, incl. Kate Moss [!], Christy Turlington, Amber Valetta and Bridget Hall. our favourite Shannon Doherty in the film "Blindfiold" reviewed 6/3/94. Shannen's father Tom for father's day. Heather Locklear. Steven gaines wroteb a Calvin Klein bio that was previewed on 6/17/94. Alec Baldwin's film "The Spirit" opened: of course the Weather show was called "The Spirit" from 1989-93.

Weather headlines: Traffic Weather in the daily News 6/3/94. A bizarre poem from the Village Voice 6/5/94 "Tonya Harding & the Weather" which seemed oddly cognizant of recent themes from our Voice-deconstructing TV show. A NY Times arts & Leisure headline from 6/21/94 "Stone Temple Pilots: Rock's Weather Vanes" which also seems to resonate with the name of our band, the Weather Vains.

Sports: the NY Rangers at last won the Stanley Cup after a drought of almost 80 years. this was front-page news & celebrated all over NYC on 6/17/94 A preview of the 1994 World Cup.

If that sounds like a lot in 29 minutes, It Is!! But I think youll agree youve never seen any newspaper/media deconstruction TV show quite like the Weather Report. I think youll also agree that these themes of Andy Warhol, POP art, top models, extreme weather, sodas, seltzers & teas, and hollywood stars in tabloid magazines, have only grown in interest popularity & cultural landmarks. Be There!!
