dec 12 1998 tiswas at don hills every saturday with american pop headlining. hi-lites of nick's set: supersonic, temptation, jesus hairdo, commercial rain, pushkings love takes flight, johnny chrome, get off my cloud, blutones slight return, animal nitrate, trash, boys & girls, this charming man, and the dandy warhols every day shold be a holiday & boys better. *** of 5 stars. BritPop might be dead in NYC but SORTED at Barbary each month is one of the hottest paties Ive attended in autumn 2008 !

dec 14 1998 st etienne was at bowery ballroom touring their splendid good humour LP. setlist: nothing can stop us. hug my soul. lose that girl. split screen. are we gonna be alright? goodnight jack. hit the brakes. i was born on xmas day. the bad photog. erica america. sylvie. like a motorway. spring. hobart paving. people get real. The 'Ets remain one of my favourite bands ever; and THANK YOU ALWAYS to Rui for "Boxette" one of 2008's best releases.

dec 19, 1998 tiswas with spacehog headlining. top tunes: shiela take a bow, beautiful ones, 96 tears, she bangs the drums, & love cats. ***3/4 of 5 stars . space hog broke up years ago & Arc Kid didnt do anything? where are royston & anthony in 2009??
* the same night liquid sky party with carlos & 187 at the cooler. and green door was still at coney island high. coney island closed like 1999 & the meat packing district signalled the demise of coller circa 2003.

dec 21 1998 lloyd cole's negatives played a great gig at bowery ballrm with jill sobule opening. setlist: first lloyd & neil clark did an acoustic set: why I love c&w music. unhappy song. 2cv. girl from the north country [dylan]. theme from the rose [bette midler] !! then the negatives set: past imperfect. so youd like to save the world. brand new friend. like lovers do. perfect skin. impossible girl. 4 flights up. that boy. shes a girl & IM a man. tried to rock. i didnt know that you cared. born in the usa. [springsteen]. dont look back. are you ready to be heartbroken. no blue skies. undressed,. i kissed a girl [sobule]. forest fire. **** of 5 stars. Lloyd Cole is among the greatest singer/songwriters ever, and that's been true from 1984 through to 2008 + beyond.

dec 24 1998 beavher at don hills a very slow xmas eve night with guests jj from dc & steve from uk. brian was at the door. top songs boys dont cry, hungry like the wolf, people are people, love + one , BLT, bang a gong, love rollercoaster, antmuzik, borderline, dancing days, when you were mine, fly lioke an eagle, brown sugar, roxanne, golden years & sufragette city. frank moved to LA and beavher seems a memory, 1994-2004.

Friday night's Weather Report is our "Best Of" awards show from December 1998. That year Tom Snyder's "Late Late Show" was my 1 TV show.

I'm re-running that December 1998 show as a tribute to the late great TV host Tom snyder, who sadly passed away earlier in August 2007.

Also on the Best of 1998 Weather Report Awards show is the category "Best 45 Singles Act" of 1998. The winners in Best 45 are The Verve, St. Etienne & Suede. the Verve's LP "Urban Hymns" featured great 45s like "Lucky Man," "The Drugs Dont Work," & "Bittersweet Symphony."

St. Etienne's "Good Humor" featured "Sylvie," "The Bad Photographer," & "Lose That Girl," along with great b sides & dance mixes. They also released the 45 "Lover Plays the Bass."

and Suede's "Coming Up" featured brilliant 45s "Trash," "Beautiful Ones," "Saturday Night," & "Lazy," along with spectacular b sides as heard on "Sci Fi Lullabies." And "Poor Little Rich Girl," from the Noel Coward tribute LP. A great year for Suede, St Etienne & the Verve as recorded on the Weather Report.
