Warhol/Edie Film Festival at Whitney Museum: Feb 1995 !!!
15 years ago in nyc nightlife: feb. 1995

jan 30 1995 a CFDA event at lincoln center

feb. 2, 1995 D Generation played CBGB's.

feb 3 1995 The Whitney Museum on 75th & Madison had a month-long Andy Warhol film program. showcasing many rarely-seen and all-important warhol film projects from early silents like 'sleep' 'eat' and 'empire' through to sound films from the mid sixties. heres the lineup for feb 3 1995: 510 pm edie sedgwick in poor little rich girl. 735 the velvet underground symphony of sound. 855 edie poor little rich girl.
* here are a few thoughts on the warhol films I saw in feb 1995 at the whitney retrospective program:
One of the more notable warhol films is "the Velvet Underground:Symphony of sound" a rehearsal film, including nico & her son ari bologne, 30 minutes of cool feedback and a mantra-like trance effect with the guitars of reed & morrison , cale's viola & mo tucker's metronome- like drumming. the film climaxes with the NYC police entering the Factory & busting up the film due to excess noise on 47th st.

one of warhol's best colour films is edie sedgwick in 'Lupe,' a scary & haunting set piece with edie dressed to the nines eating dinner at a richly-appointed dakota apartment on west 72nd st as she free-associates and chatters on talking to herself for about 30 minutes. It's a version of the real-life Hollywood suicide of actress Lupe Velez, and given edie's fragile mental state & drug overdose death about 5 years later, this film is eerily precient, harrowing, sad, darkly comic and totally involving.

'beauty #2': imo edie's very best performance in a warhol film, where she makes out with 2 guys & smokes weed in her black bra and panties on her bed in a 1 hour film. the 1st half of the film is totally out of focus; when the focus suddenly is corrected in part 2 its a revelation; edie's co-star here is gino piserchio; its a fascinating and sexually charged film of twisted near-animalistic courtship, the young stud and a wasted, deathly skinny edie, still somehow compelling and erotic in her sultry black french lingerie & wasted, masochistic vulnerability. Lupe & Beauty #2 are by far the best edie sedgwick films you will ever see, if youre lucky enough to see them screened !!!

I understand the new , pathetic 'Factory Girl' film recreates 'Beauty #2' but of course gets it all wrong: as this week's village voice review describes. Here's an excerpt from nathan lee in this week's Voice:

"Hickenlooper ...mutilates Beauty #2, the richest of Warhol's cine-interrogations and the apex of Edie's underground Superstardom. Plunked on a bed with a chunk of stud named Gino, Edie submits to the offscreen questions of Chuck Wein (a clueless Jimmy Fallon), an old friend of Edie's whose crucial and controversial role in the Factory ecosystem is here glossed over. Factory Girl literalizes the rape scenario implicit in Beauty #2, escalating into the vulgar (and wildly exaggerated) spectacle of Wein forcing Gino on the distressed starlet. "
