1 year ago in nyc nightlife: oct 2007

oct 1, 2007 parties at sway in soho & darkroom on LES.

oct 2 2007 marika w hosted happy ending

oct 3 2007 secret machines were at annex. tokyo police club & bloc party were at paramount/ msg. all 3 bands seem to be holding up pretty well into 2008.

oct 4 2007 cameron moir & romina hosted a hot thursday night at UPSTAIRS on spring street. it was more of a lounge/cocktail vibe than a full-on discos/dance thing. DJs were prince peter, mike nouveau & justin allen. guests incl. lady lucy carr-ellison. i stayed from 11-1230 am ** of 5 stars. upstairs IS LONG LONG OVER.
* next up to CIELO on little west 12th st. rob & benny presented a special night of NYs best house djs: I was comped the $25 entry fee. peter bailey played good chunky house. little louis vega killed with superb NYC house classics. tom stephan closed it out with a high energy & crowded set. ****
I attended a special intimate event at ARTS GARAGE in Phila last friday with Lil Louis Vega DJ-ing, and it was some of the best house music Ive heard this year.

oct 5 2007 ferry corsten played his hard trance at pacha. don hill's hosted a new indie night.

oct 6 2007 I went to erick morillo at pacha. in 2000 morillo might have been one of nyc's best djs but he is commercial cheese now. I was comped the $40 admission. jason ojeda played a good opening set incl MFSB "TSOP." morillo came on at 2 am and played some hard house bangers but I could not deal with the guido crowd, even with a few hot girls. lasted til 4 am. *** of 5 stars. i was not feeling the vibe there.
** the same night : tiswas was at annex.

oct 7 2007 junior vasquez was at cielo.

oct 9 2007 sander kleinenberg was at cielo.

oct 10 2007 the raveonettes were at southpaw in BK.

oct 12 2007 i saw the raveonettes at bowerty ballrm. Here's my review on the night:
"The RAVEONETTES at Bowery Ballroom:
I saw the Raveonettes Friday night at Bowery Ballroom, a marvelous show previewing their third LP.
They played all their established styles from Jesus & Chain feedback pop, to Cramps-like psycho-billy, to 60s-esque girl group pop.
The new songs are more light pop with harmonies and really smart orchestration/arrangements that actually reach a Cocteau Twins-like kind of spiralling ethereal beauty.
The set highlight was a cover of StereoLab's "French Disko," which sounded like the archetypal dance-rock template - the Rapture & even LCD wish they could write such a good melody as StereoLab's, & play it as sleek & punchy as the Raveonettes did.
Based on last night's preview concert the Raveonettes third LP sounds like its their best work yet, very much classic 60s girl group pop with a smart post-modern edge and sophisticated arrangements that recall orchestral pop like 1960s Beach Boys or St Etienne circa "So Tough." "" And so it was - the Raveonettes 20-08 LP is my fave yet of theirs, and the Phila gig I saw at Johnny Brenda's spring 2008 was even better.
* afterwards up to ruff club. I gave ian & chris hamptons magazines. i gave denny a jamc cd. i gave 24court a yellow/orange drawing of mine. guests incl marika w, alain, sofia, romina & greg k. I enjoyed the electro upstairs, stayed til 330. **3/4
** the same night, sasha was at pacha. the delya heavy II show at TLA this spring was awful. i think sasha has jumped the shark.

oct 13 2007 trentemoller was at rebel. david morales was at pacha with hector romero. I wish Morales played ny & phila more these days, like lil louis he is a legend in the flesh.

oct 17 2007 misshapes dj-ed a hugo boss party. the hamptons int'l film fest was happening on main street in the Village of east hampton, the Regal cinema to be precise.

oct 18 2007 roger sanchez was at cielo. another nyc house legend. S-Man's XMas party at cielo looks very worthy this year.

oct 19 2007 oscar g was at pacha.

oct 20 2007 carl cox and victor calderone were at pacha. i was comped the $40 admission, thanks to stimulous response! I gave gabe 2 dj vibe cds. cox came on at 1230. he played extraordinary tech-house. with a euro-disco-metallic edge. it was too crowded & the staff sucked. I loved it from 1230-330 but i had to leave. still ****1/2 of 5 stars even with all the hassle - ot was still my #5 club night of 2007 [morrissey was #1, derrick carter #2, & 2 dj vibe sets at #3 & #4].

oct 22 2007 morrissey began his 5 night residence at hammerstein ballroom, the best concerts of 2007.

oct 25 2007 tokyo police club were in SF.

oct 26 2007 pvd was at roseland. jamc were at fillmore sf. I cannot wait for a new JAMC LP & east coast tour!!

Here are some selected readers' comments from my BLOG:
LOLCAIT : Just lovely, but what of Marla Maples???

KARENUHOH : You should definitely have a book deal. Or, you should be hired as a police sketch artist.

BIFTECK : Bravo/a!

JOSH SPEED : The Earl Grey rocks my world. People just don't notice that level of minutiae, unless you're like Rain Man or Proust, you know? I worship at the altar.

HA HA SOUND : StereoLab = Stereolab
French Disco = French Disko
Trust me on this. Cool that Early Grey listens to the Cocteau Twins, although that makes me feel older than anything Facebook could ever do.

ELLAGOOD : i can't help but picture simon doonan, writing wildly a la mr. belvedere.

M. POMPADOUR : The Earl is great. Especially for a) recalling a long-ago magazine cover and b) alluding not only to St. Etienne, but to a particular album. Well done. I hope he runs into Madonna next time.

SMIRK : Wow, the level of detail he remembers is AWESOME. I can barely remember people's names, nevermind if their ballerina flats were made from supple leather or not. Seriously, how does he do it? I mean, if I stare at someone for longer than two seconds at the gym, I either get beaten up later by the guy outside or beaten off later by the guy in the steam room.

FISHMAN : Can we get Earl to do the Blue States Lose commentary this week?

SCROLL_LOCK: His Nibs The Earl is fabulous.
Looking at the Spy cover, I'm wondering if Ivana really had those baked bean looking teeth?

ITSJUSTCATNIP : I'm right there on the street with these descriptions, in fact I think I've stepped in something. Fabulous.

DOROTHYMANTOOTH : @M. Pompadour: St. Etienne had other albums?
(Also, would you like some sweets, Willie?)
