march 30, 1999 I saw BLUR at roseland on their "13" LP tour. I thought it was an excellent show & the "13" LP really holds up, especially Graham's great 45 'coffee & TV." the other day at La.Va. cafe on south st & 21st, Adam played the "Blur" LP and that 1 held up great too - AND Blur is reforming for some gigs this summer! I hope they play USA too + a new LP w/ Graham !!
april 2, 1999 I went to squeezebox at don hill's for mark lewis' supersonic New Pop Jet. also support from Smitty's, the Friggs & Theo from Lunachicks. Top tunes from DJ Jayne County incl. stones' starfucker, bowie diamond dogs, brother louis by stories, derringer rock & roll hoochie coo, and BOC dont fear the reaper. debbie harry was in attendance. You might have heard of the Mis-Shapes and MotherF****r parties - both were heavily indebted to Squeezebox- in fact some might say that SqueezeBox was the originator, and the others were short-lived versions. Could be.
* I also was over at sway with michael lamorte from Fictura.
april 3, 1999 tiswas at don hill's with mooney suzuki headlining & support from bianca & bunsen honeydew. guests incl anna & scott from nj, keith ozar, and pedro from shout! top tunes from nick incl. archie bell's tighten up, booker t green onions, stardust's music sounds better, and the smiths wm it was really nothing. Nick's got a great playlist, I(m less inclined to visit Webstar Hall than Don Hill's, howevs...

april 28, 1999 ON! was at Life on bleecker street, a great psychedelic freakout party with guests melanie & kathleen, nick p from HQ, and MFer hostess justine d. top tunes included bad company, stills' love the 1 your with, & paperback writer. ON! was definitely a highlight of late 90s nyc clubbing. spa/plaid never matched its wednesday night colour or widescreen energy. Life is back as 'Le Poisson Rouge." Havent been yet --
popular clubs in april 1999 included karaoke at the elbow room on weds, the cooler on west 14th st [before meat packing was ruined by clubhs like 1Oak], vinyl/nasa [closed 5+ years ago]. Life, twilo [became spirit, now closed], idlewild, sound factory [now pacha]. and the tunnel. interesting how the top clubs of 1999 are a distant memory now, eh?
* my favourite radio stations in april 1999 were CBS-fm's oldies & the new jammin 105 soul classics format.
* my fave cds in april 1999 were paul oakenfold's 2 year Cream residency, Blur's 13 & its 45 'tender.' suede's head music & 45 electricity would appear in may. the noise-pop elements of 'head music' were probably about 10 years ahead of their time ....
* my favourite new bands were scotland's idlewild & bijou phillip's id rather eat glass. bijou became a hollywood psycho burnout joke, and she never released another LP. Pity, her music is great but her immaturity forever doomed her acting/modelling.
** and april 30 1999 SUEDE played copenhagen denmark. heres the setlist as they toured the 'head music' lp: cant get enough. electricity. trash. she. everything will flow. ndian strings. beautiful ones. elephant man. down. hes gone. lazy. savoir faire. crack in union jack.
the suede shows I saw onj their first 3 LPs are among the greatest concerts I attended in the 1990s, particularly Coming Up at Supper Club.

april 7, 1994 i went to the whitney museum where they had a month-long retrospective of andy warhol's black & white films. i saw the 'velvet underground & nico' film which is one long 30 minute jam as the band rehearses for the cameras with nico & her young son ari at the center. at the end the ny police come to shut them down due to noise complaints in the 47th st. neighbourhood of the factory. this is the single best performance video ive seen of the 60s velvets lineup, [most of the Exploding Plastic Inevitable VU films lack sound], also notable for the lengthy improvised jam which sounds somewhere between 'european son' & 'sister ray' but even more noise-based and lacking any kind of pop/song structure- its a throbbing feedback jam also closest to some of the long jams on robert quine's 3 cd VU cassette collection.
also shot video out side the museum with manhattan cable tv/downtown performance artist Nico Star, and Nick Zedd, the downtown filmmaker who used to provide films every Friday night at don hill's for the squeezebox party in the mid-90s.

I also enjoyed the portrayals of stuart sutcliffe & john lennon. I also ran into robin williams as he exited the carlyle hotel on madison and 76th st.
april 22, 1994 i saw the charlatans at irving plaza with rob collins on keyboards. i also saw the charlies in 1990 at the marquee on the 'some friendly' tour! and later at the roxy with the dandy warhols opening up. and also at roseland with stereophonics.
tuesday, april 26, 1994 i met morrissey for the first time at tower records on west 4th st. moz was promoting his stunning vauxhall LP. I got to tower at 1 am on the early morning of the 26th. after waiting for 17 hours moz appeared at 6 pm and a rainshower immediately erupted,. soaking all of us who'd been waiting since early tuesday morning. jake took 2 pics of moz & me. . I chatted with moz & his best friend [on the payroll] jake about the photography on 'vauxhall,' and how i preferred jake's 'the more you ignore me' 45 sleeve to the final vauxhall cover. Moz signed my 'suedehead' 12" 'to clint with love & thanks morrissey" It was one of the greatest days of my life. And one of the best things that hapened to me in the 1990s. It may sound funny, but I swear meeting moz in april 1994 set me on a path of good luck that ran from the spring of 1994, when I visited Italy, through to the summer of 1999 - Im serious meeting moz gave me FIVE YEARS of good luck. I also met him for a 2nd time at Virgin union square when he was signing the 'oye esteban' DVD. justine delaney was also there - later known as nightlife model justine D. and my best Moz friend that night bwas jayanti tamm, who spent the first 25 years of her life as a disciple of sri chimnoy + just wrote a book about it, 'cartwheeling in saris.'
april 27, 1994 alan barcoff took me to the paramount theatre [now the theatre at msg] for the Source awards [alan asked john barrett & I to take photos for him of his many hiphop friends]. we met [the late] tupac shakur [!!], luke from 2live crew, run dmc, naughty by nature, queen latifah, heavy d, rosie perez, lisa lisa, and onyx. and the east coast-west coast feud was kicked into high gear with inflammatory remarks from snoop dogg & suge knight [re: p. diddy/babde boy] on stage which later ended up in the murders of tupac & biggie smalls. the april 1994 source awards was the first shot in this long simmering feud. subsequent feuds have incl fifty cent vs the game, and now fiddy vs officer ricky lool.
some of my favourite restaurants in april 1994 incl blimpie's on lex & 78th, & iammo bello on east 60th [heavenly baked ziti], both restaurants are now closed.
my favourite film in april 1994 was 'backbeat' an interesting history piece about the beatles 1961-63 hamburg Germany residency, stu sutcliffe, klaus vorman, & astrid kirchner.

march 2, 1999 alex english's fab Til Tuesday party debuted at bar 13. opening night guest incl. kathleen & christine, nancy from staten, jenna from LI, chris court, & steve from shout! top tunes from alex's magic tables incl heaven knows im miserable now, st etienne who do you think you are, moz suedehead, and new order's subculture. in the last decade alex has become one of nyc's most familiar djs, operating out of the GBH stable. everyone else from that party disappeared and /or left town. weird eh??
march 4, 1999 beavher was at coney island high for a few months. guests this night incl. george gilson from athens, alice from nj & nico star's friend kim punkrock. beavher was 1 of nyc's best 90s parties at don hill's but frank always had potitical trouble keeping it going with don hill. so frankie gave up & moved to LA. its sad.
frankie's hits incl. devo uncontrollable urge, beatles tomorrow never knows, iggy's the passenger, rockwell somebodys watching me, bowie lets dance & young americans, smiths how soon is now, and night fever. also opening sets from bands finger 11, shades apart & picasso jones. brian was on the door. frank's music was great; its a shame his music could not survive in nyc.

march 13, 1999 tiswas featured an amazing set from mark lewis' new pop jet, also supercuz opening up, guests michael lamorte, anna & scott from NJ, keith ozar, and daniel from american pop. top trax incl chems leave home, dodgy good enuf, oasis some might say, new radicals you get what u give, monkees stepping stone, pulp do you remember the 1st time, smiths panic, blur shes so high, and stone roses elephant stone 12" . you cant argue with nick's britpop playlist, but other than mark lewis, nick, alex english & myself, no one from 10 years ago at don hills even goes out in 212 anymore. so lame

march 18, 1999 lloyd cole played solo acoustic at mercury lounge with philip foxman opening up. set list: unhappy song. i didnt know that you cared. chelsea hotel #2. imposible girl. youre a big girl now. that boy. sunday morning coming down. artificial tears- debut of this negatives bonus track. trigger happy. 4 flights up. waterline. 2cv. reason to believe [tim hardin]. these days [jackson browne]. brand new friend. girl of the north country. dont look back. forest fire. undressed. just an amazing set of originals + covers - lloyd is one of the greatest singer-song-writers ever and he's still doing it , since 1983 !!!!!!
march 19, 1999 coney island high featured a big lineup incl. insomniacs, mooney suzuki, bianca, ultra fine, & damn personals. big line up- for 1999!! coney closed a year or 2 after. mkooney suzuki prob sold about 60.000 CDs ever. and sdropped from every label they were on.
march 20, 1999 tiswas at don's with american pop, optic nerve & mantaray performing. top tunes from nick: new order temptation, jb sex machine, suede metal mickey, jumping jack flash & charlatans jesus hairdo. tiswas might have been better at coney island, but it sure was great in 1999 at dons !
march 25, 1999 perfecto at the bowery ballroom with paul oakenfold & dave ralphs. another transcendant night in oakey's golden 1999. oakey cant even be bothered to play ny even once a year in 2008/09. in 99 he came every 2,3 months. he seemed invincible in 99. now hes in the dustbin. hes playing atlantic city in june 2009- maybe I'll bring margaret mead with me to explain the locals loool.
march 26, 1999 jenna & I attended Blur's "13" record release party at limelight. many free drinks. then we went over to sway where nick marc was spinning. and then squeezebox at don's with white burning car, supla zoo, mistress formika with the squeezebox band & miss guy & jayne county dj-ing. my tune of the night was doobie bros. long train runnin' . squeezebox could hold its own as don hills greatest party ever, up there with beavher & tiswas. Blur. what a great band the last 20 years.
and even better in concert. and reformed with graham in summer 2009 yayyyy!!!!!!

march 25, 1999 perfecto at the bowery ballroom with paul oakenfold & dave ralphs. another transcendant night in oakey's golden 1999. oakey cant even be bothered to play ny even once a year in 2008/09. in 99 he came every 2,3 months. he seemed invincible in 99. now hes in the dustbin. hes playing atlantic city in june 2009- maybe I'll bring margaret mead with me to explain the locals loool.
march 26, 1999 jenna & I attended Blur's "13" record release party at limelight. many free drinks. then we went over to sway where nick marc was spinning. and then squeezebox at don's with white burning car, supla zoo, mistress formika with the squeezebox band & miss guy & jayne county dj-ing. my tune of the night was doobie bros. long train runnin' . squeezebox could hold its own as don hills greatest party ever, up there with beavher & tiswas. Blur. what a great band the last 20 years.
and even better in concert. and reformed with graham in summer 2009 yayyyy!!!!!!

feb 16 2008 started out the night at trash in williamsburg. you cant imagine how much a lifetime manhattanite like me hates the L train and the people of BillyBurg in the 21st Cent. You really cant imagine. Took pics with owen, jim brown. gave joel a new reality button. my 2 fave nyc bands of the 21st century are the everyothers + rockethouse. everyothers were truly great. set: go down soon. tickethome. surprise surprise. too far. pink sticky lies. dive with you. something wrong. john Im only dancing. whatever you want. like a drug / break that bottle. absolutely fab set **** of 5 stars

march 11 1994 my brother's birthday party at hatsuhana on 48th st guests incl. susan holmes from elite, later married duff from GnR & designed swimwear.
march 12, 1994 the cocteau twins at roseland [4 calendar cafe tour?] with luna & moose opening. the cocteaus were pretty good live but the late 80s ritz show i saw of theirs was much better. I also found luna to be disappointing compared to the excellent galaxie 900. to be fair it was their 1st LP, I know many people became fans later on.
march 22, 1994 morrissey released 'vauxhall & I' which may be his best solo work & imo this LP compares favourably with smiths' LPs like meat is murder, the queen is dead & strangeways here we come. 15 years later I dont think Moz has matched Vauxhall on LP; but his gigs from 99-present rank among the greatest shows he's played, solo or with Smiths.
march 24, 1994 tickets went on sale for morrissey's carnegie hall shows, [april 11 & 12], which were later cancelled. he's playing carneigie, webster & bowery on this tour 2009.
march 25, 1994 I saw madder rose at brownie's courtesy of tvt. I very much miss browniesw as an intimate ave a venue.
march 30, 1994 pavement at irving plaza on the crooked rain tour. hi-lites incl. silence kid, cut your hair, and heaven is a truck. the band was good but the slacker crowd was flat. *** of 5 stars. It was a treat to go backstage however & hang with evan dando & chris lombardi from matador records.

It's no exaggeration to say that these 2 women were on the front page of the Post, News & the Times for 2 weeks straight! Dont believe me? Just watch! I show every front page headline of these 2 & you'll quickly remember it was a sopa opera that riveted the entire world !! PLUS I show a cool video of Kerrigan's silver medal winning short program, set to the music of the dance mix of St Etienne's "Pale Movie" !!! In the end Oksana Baiul took the Gold as the entire world watched!

march 11 1994 my brother's birthday party at hatsuhana on 48th st guests incl. susan holmes from elite, later married duff from GnR & designed swimwear.
march 12, 1994 the cocteau twins at roseland [4 calendar cafe tour?] with luna & moose opening. the cocteaus were pretty good live but the late 80s ritz show i saw of theirs was much better. I also found luna to be disappointing compared to the excellent galaxie 900. to be fair it was their 1st LP, I know many people became fans later on.
march 22, 1994 morrissey released 'vauxhall & I' which may be his best solo work & imo this LP compares favourably with smiths' LPs like meat is murder, the queen is dead & strangeways here we come. 15 years later I dont think Moz has matched Vauxhall on LP; but his gigs from 99-present rank among the greatest shows he's played, solo or with Smiths.
march 24, 1994 tickets went on sale for morrissey's carnegie hall shows, [april 11 & 12], which were later cancelled. he's playing carneigie, webster & bowery on this tour 2009.
march 25, 1994 I saw madder rose at brownie's courtesy of tvt. I very much miss browniesw as an intimate ave a venue.
march 30, 1994 pavement at irving plaza on the crooked rain tour. hi-lites incl. silence kid, cut your hair, and heaven is a truck. the band was good but the slacker crowd was flat. *** of 5 stars. It was a treat to go backstage however & hang with evan dando & chris lombardi from matador records.

I show every front page headline of these 2 & you'll quickly remember it was a sopa opera that riveted the entire world !! It was the 1 and only time I ever attended this infamous scuzz rock party. it was valentines & presidents day. I was comped the $25 admission by duke & jester at the door. it was really crowded & hot. ran into Jesse from salford lads/sadie/alps. we watched "!!!" [chik chik chik] who were pretty new, 1 45 out I think. around this time people were talking about "nyc punk/funk" with I guess rapture/DFA being leading names. !!! has returned to well-deserved obscurity. Listen I saw A CERTAIN RATIO on their 1st & 2nd LP tours, and this !!! shit was really embarassing. with some hives/strokes garage influence thrown in for added amateurishness. talked to jesse malin from DGen, he said Niagara is good on fridays. ron m was there on stilts, moco jumbi wha ? lool. it was hot & fun, like a tristate rock scuzz convention. spotlight on New Jerz lool. songs: shannon let the music play. stardust music feels better. cheap trick elle kiddies. pretenders precious! bowie hang on to yrself. hot hot heat. it was good while I was there til 2 am. ***1/2 of 5 stars. but I never went to another MFer. Centrofly's been closed for years. and JUust, Michael, Jonny & George all ended MFer a few years back under cloakede deep acrimony & antipathy. Justine I will always love you. Rawk n Roll !!

Got there 230. junior played melodic house & classics, warming up. madonna deeper & deeper wild vocal mix. bango. 'take me higher' diana remix ? cool lights, fog, crowd was UP & wasted. U2 "Lemon" over dark progg beat was so cool. junior even whipped out some 200 bpm hardcore techno just to open our eyes a bit! stayed til 530. Im sure it went til noon. ***3/4 of 5 stars. Junior might be among the most famous house DJs & producers ever but he STILL never gets the props he deserves- when he is "ON" he can stand with the greatest DJs Ive ever heard live - and Ive heard pretty much every 'name' dj.

King was at door. excellent renovation, looks a lot like miami crobar/cameo. huge dance floor w/2nd flr booths. mix of savvy ny clubbers & 201 guidos. but fun atmosphere. erick morillo headlined, subliminal winter sessions tour. he came out on fire, ibiza stompers, filtered house. euro disco. hi-lites coldplay god smiled. wackassMFer. midnight express chase. noah tepperberg came after marquee closed. stayed til 530. lots of energy & good erick set **** of 5 stars.

Jan. 29, 1999 Sasha & Digweed headlined Twilo in their legendary monthly progresive trance residency. the only way to describe S&D's sets at Twilo circa 98-2000 is legendary - all the tiesto & armin van buuren sets in nyc in 2008 are a joke compared to S&D at their very VERY peak best.
sadly, sasha has gone all bleepy/ableton and diggers is like minimal tech now, but I understand some nights Digs still reminds us he is among the 10-15 best djs of this century.
* The Realistics headlined Arlene's Grocery. the realistics. remember when they had a Levi's ad in PAPER & were 'friends with the Strokes."? that's a pretty sad legacy.
Jan. 30, 1999 Tiswas at Don hill's featured bands Ultrafine, Thomas James, and The Every Other, recently known as The Everyothers- America's best rock & roll band circa 2000-2007. Top tunes from Nick Marc incl. Pink Floyd "See Emily Play," Byrds "Feel a whole lot better," The Farm "Groovy Train," Stones' "Shes a Rainbow." Nick Marc was an outstanding dj in 1999. tiswasw just moved to webster hall?? the everyothers were the best nyc band of the last 10 years, but owen mccarthy's solo aspirations seem to have ended both of their careers. c'mon lads.
Feb. 4, 1999 BeavHer moved to Coney Island High for a few months. top tunes from Frank incl. 'funkytown,' ashes to ashes, burning down the house, & donna summer's 'bad girls.' the tunes & the crowds were pretty good at coney but beavher magic just doesnt translate outside don hill's imo. beavher was my fave party circa 1994-95. frank lives in LA now. its sad.

Feb. 11, 1999 Johnny Fayva was back at coney island high beavher, featuring a nude photo of fayva & ricky on the pass. fayva's set included zep's 'rain song,' "taking things down a notch," as johnny observed in his always-technicolour between songs patter. hits from frankie incl. emotional rescue, d'ya think m sexy, mirror in the bathroom & wake me up before you go-go. attendees incl. tessa benson, tatiana von furstenberg, dave gardner from electric chair, and sam kripalani from browning. like I say, fayva & frank moved to LA : enjoy the sunshine boys, that aint living compared to manhattan, even in 2009.

karen kilimnick had a great painting show at 303 gallery on west 22nd street. I met the late leo castelli & his wife barbara bertozzi on east 79th street, and we discussed roy lichtenstein's 70s abstracted still-lifes. lichtenstein, kilimnick, castelli - that's some all-time hot stuff, baby !!!!

Repeat: Ive seen concerets since 1971, 38 years, and the clashy's debut show in 2/79 was THE SINGLE GREATEST CONCERT Ive ever seen. better than springsteen 76. stones 78. echo bunnymen 1983-84. PiL 80. Zep 77. aerosmith 76. smiths 85. morrissey 92, 2000, 2004.

* A highly significant concert in the history of The Clash, particularly in terms of breaking the band in the USA. There was a buzz about the band in the US before the Pearl Harbour Tour but here at the Palladium were the key players in US rock journalism (not to mention the New York glitterati of De Niro, Andy Warhol, Springsteen ,Paul Simon). The band were fully aware this was the big one that could really break the band in the States, and they did not fail putting in a superb charged but professional performance.
* a night of nights - Strummer
Strummer remembers it now, still as one of the greatest and most significant Clash concerts, “a night of nights”. Joe had said, “Rock’n’roll changed the way I look at society” The Clash were attempting to make the US do the same. They had come to the USA, not to bury rock’n’roll but to reclaim and re-energise it.
They won important converts to their cause at this concert. Journalists previously sympathetic were now bowled over: the now legendary Lester Bangs declared it one of the best concerts he’d seen in his life; “They launched into I’m So Bored With The USA with a surge of energy that surpassed any band we’d ever seen and just built and built, leaving us all drained and ecstatic”. Tom Carson in Rolling Stone wrote, “The Clash unleashed one of the most staggering performances I’ve ever seen. It was music of heroic grandeur, epic sweep and visceral force; each song was faster and meaner than on record and had twice the impact”
* The equally influential Robert Christgau, wrote the Palladium crowd was on its feet before a single note was played and 2 hours later were still on their feet. Christgau eloquently described the visual and aural impact of The Clash; Mick and Paul leapt around as if no stage could hold them, Topper’s drums cracked through the music with the authority of machine gun fire, Mick’s ethereal, incantatory back up vocals filled the gaps in Joe’s harsh leads. “Strummer his eyes alight and staring as he snarled and screamed his message, looked like a man who’d just seen everything he loved destroyed, unsure whether to explode with rage or run for his life. His extraordinarily expressive face conveyed as much wit as passion.”

It was their first performance in America and many of us wondered whether these punkers from England could deliver the goods, many had their doubts. The lights came down. Beams of light started searching the stage, like prison spotlights. Suddenly a huge roar, a machinegun-like volley of raw guitars and drums. The Clash tear into 'I'm So Bored With The U.S.A.' The power and glory of rock and roll had never sounded so urgent and furious. Joe Strummer leaned into the mike like he was about to rip it from the stand with his teeth. His voice, a cry, a scream, a call to arms, a liberating burst of human anger and rock and roll voodoo. The Clash were the sound and fury of a new generation of rockers ready to riot and ride out on strings of steel and thundering drums. This was more than music, this was the human heart, the gut, the soul, electrified, amplified, bonafide!

Jan. 29, 1999 Sasha & Digweed headlined Twilo in their legendary monthly progresive trance residency. the only way to describe S&D's sets at Twilo circa 98-2000 is legendary - all the tiesto & armin van buuren sets in nyc in 2008 are a joke compared to S&D at their very VERY peak best.
sadly, sasha has gone all bleepy/ableton and diggers is like minimal tech now, but I understand some nights Digs still reminds us he is among the 10-15 best djs of this century.
* The Realistics headlined Arlene's Grocery. the realistics. remember when they had a Levi's ad in PAPER & were 'friends with the Strokes."? that's a pretty sad legacy.
Jan. 30, 1999 Tiswas at Don hill's featured bands Ultrafine, Thomas James, and The Every Other, recently known as The Everyothers- America's best rock & roll band circa 2000-2007. Top tunes from Nick Marc incl. Pink Floyd "See Emily Play," Byrds "Feel a whole lot better," The Farm "Groovy Train," Stones' "Shes a Rainbow." Nick Marc was an outstanding dj in 1999. tiswasw just moved to webster hall?? the everyothers were the best nyc band of the last 10 years, but owen mccarthy's solo aspirations seem to have ended both of their careers. c'mon lads.

'funkytown,' ashes to ashes, burning down the house, & donna summer's 'bad girls.' the tunes & the crowds were pretty good at coney but beavher magic just doesnt translate outside don hill's imo. beavher was my fave party circa 1994-95. frank lives in LA now. its sad.
