SELECTED READERS' COMMENTS:
* AMISHREBEL :...everything operates in cycles, I suppose
* MATTGAYMON : But what was 19103 like in 1998?
* THEHONJUDGESMAILS @AmishRebel: Yeah, this sounds like my past couple of weekends.
Also: SPACEHOG!?!?! Awesome.
* DWAYNE PROVECHO Dear Earl,
Was the Mooney Suzuki show at Coney Island High the one where they opened for thee Headcoats and thee Headcoatees? Because I was at that one, but I can't remember the exact date. One of the best shows I've ever been to, and certainly one of my top 3 in NYC.
*JMACNY : angular banjos sound good to me...
* FIVEINCHTAINT : @TheHonJudgeSmails: Dude writes one catchy tune and lands Liv Tyler. That song wasn't that great, was it?
* THEOLOGICALSONG : well done, EG. your use of well documented intricate detail, presented in a bare bones reportorial style, becomes strangely, almost maudlin-ly poetic as it accumulates. not at all to dismiss the more generalized amusingly sardonic dialogues of The storied Past, but this approach somehow arrives with more emotional force for me. without getting too insular here, I suspect we have many friends in common, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we know each other. fruit for another conversation. for now, thanks for bringing it back. I s'pose my only caveat is: a fairly narrow swath of your demimonde, as represented here. a more expansive window might be nice. but I imagine this was an accurate depiction of the netherworld you were inhabiting at the time.
* FLOSSY : Drum & Bass? Psy-Trance? Brit-Pop? This makes me glad I was only 12.
* CHEAP SHOT @yourfriendandneighbor:
Then: no table service, smoking allowed rampant drug use.
Now: table service, no smoking, not so rampant drug use.
I prefer the former.
* MICKEYITALIANO : Not to knock 'the Earl', but anyone with a synapse left of pre and post NYC nightlife highs and lows may agree to the late 80's early 90's, being on par with the days of Max's and early CB's.
* THEHONJUDGESMAILS @fiveinchtaint: Perhaps fittingly, neither is Liv Tyler, anymore.
* KOALA325 Sadly, Patch Adams is the only thing I remember about 1998.
* SALLY TOMATO Duu-huuude. Are you rockin' the Philly zip? Is that what that signoff is? Because if you are, I am so loving you. Also, love that you're listening to Aja. I guess I'm not the only Steely Dan-loving Philadelphia native on the premises.
* SEEINGI What, no Squeezebox?
* JMACNY : @Sally Tomato: I'm on the top of that list, brave as I may be to admit it. (not Philly, I'm in NYC)....Steely Dan were pretty snarky, hidden by the lounge jazz sounds.....smart guys.
* MONKEY_BUTTER What! Where's Mother and Jackie 60, boy you people have total flea memory. What you do think inspired most of what is above here.
* THEHONJUDGESMAILS @JMacNY: @Sally Tomato: Steely Dan ruled.
* FLIPPER BABY My reminiscence of February 1998: Enjoyed Okocim at the Olde Homestead Inn, avoided everything the Earl mentioned.
* HYPATIA Oh man. I was such a little retard, but I wish I'd saved my flyers. I was at at least two of those events (Grooverider/Frost/DB/Dara and Suzuki).
* THIGHHIGH @yourfriendandneighbor:
As my mother used to say when I complained of having nothing to do: There are no boring days, only boring people.Same with cities.
* FROMTHEFUTURE OMG! Tiswas! How could I forget! Sigh. Thank you.
* SUPERBIEN @MattGaymon: Kinda "meh", but on the cusp of blossoming into the bougie decadence that it is now. Rittenhouse Square is a lovely park . . .
* UNRED AT 03:19 PM
The Upper Crust and Coney Island High! And not knowing if you were going to be assaulted on St. Marks Place. Such good memories.
* YOURFRIENDANDNEIGHBOR AT 03:32 PM
@ThighHigh: Did your mother say that 10 years ago when everything was cooler?
* KLL5 But what about Baktun? When 14th street between 9th and 10th had the Cooler, Baktun, Mother, the Belgian place, the 24 hour and the deli. And that was about it for blocks!
Also, these were the last sputtering days of raves in burnt out clubs in Times Square.
* SNAPPALOOSA I was at that Spacehog show. A friend invited me to come along after I got stood up ("aw, shit, babe-- got called in to work! Can't get out of it") by my schmuck of a boyfriend.
Wouldn't ya know it, but there, in the back of the room, sucking face with a girl who was decidedly NOT me, was that schmuck of a boyfriend. "Working," I guess?
Oh well. At least it was a good show. That said, the best thing I ever saw at Wesbeth was Crash Worship in 1994...

NYC NIGHTLIFE in MARCH 1994: The Cocteau Twins & Pavement
NYC NIGHTLIFE in MARCH 1994: The Cocteau Twins & Pavement
NYC NIGHTLIFE in MARCH 1994:
march 11 1994 my brother's birthday party at hatsuhana on 48th st guests incl. susan holmes from elite, later married duff from GnR & designed swimwear.
march 12, 1994 the cocteau twins at roseland [4 calendar cafe tour?] with luna & moose opening. the cocteaus were pretty good live but the late 80s ritz show i saw of theirs was much better. I also found luna to be disappointing compared to the excellent galaxie 900. to be fair it was their 1st LP, I know many people became fans later on.
march 22, 1994 morrissey released 'vauxhall & I' which may be his best solo work & imo this LP compares favourably with smiths' LPs like meat is murder, the queen is dead & strangeways here we come. 15 years later I dont think Moz has matched Vauxhall on LP; but his gigs from 99-present rank among the greatest shows he's played, solo or with Smiths.
march 24, 1994 tickets went on sale for morrissey's carnegie hall shows, [april 11 & 12], which were later cancelled. he's playing carneigie, webster & bowery on this tour 2009.
march 25, 1994 I saw madder rose at brownie's courtesy of tvt. I very much miss browniesw as an intimate ave a venue.
march 30, 1994 pavement at irving plaza on the crooked rain tour. hi-lites incl. silence kid, cut your hair, and heaven is a truck. the band was good but the slacker crowd was flat. *** of 5 stars. It was a treat to go backstage however & hang with evan dando & chris lombardi from matador records.
my business meetings in march 1994 incl mark kostabi at kostabi world.
the whitney museum continued its retrospective of andy warhol's 1960s films incl. many rarely seen edie sedgwick, nico, and velvet underground classics. I filmed a cable TV "weather report" with the underground film stars nico star and nick zedd at the whitney museum march 26.
2 music fanzines were favourites in 1994, morrissey's Morrizine & the suede fanzine swayed.
some of my favourite restaurants in march 1994 incl skyyline coffee shoppe on 75th, & soupburg on 79/80 and lexington. by the summer I went vegetarian & Ive never gone back to meat eating. skyyline was a nyc institution for about 50 years but closed 5 years ago and is now a crap "starwich" yuck.
some of my favourite music in march 1994 incl. morrissey's the more you ignore me 45, pavement's crooked rain & slanted/enchanted, dinosaur jr living all over me, cranberries linger, and snoop's gin & juice.
* more march 1994 news as seen on my video show 'the weather report': Vol. 14" a Media deconstruction episode filmed between Feb. 21 and March 7, 1994.
POP Art/Andy Warhol: A book on NICO from the Velvet Underground is reviewed in the New York Times.
* Lisa Robinson broke the world exclusive story ion the NY Post that the VU 1993 re-union was over, due to Lou Reed's opressive production demands on John Cale.
* Edie Sedgwick in the pages of Vogue with some rare 1960s b&w photos !!
* and Werther's Original caramel hard candies; Top Cat the cartoon cat; Mickey Mouse.
Sports/Video: The Olympics were the top news story in Feb/March 1994, particularly the soap opera-like rivalry between American skaters Nancy Kerrigan & Tonya Harding. It's no exaggeration to say that these 2 women were on the front page of the Post, News & the Times for 2 weeks straight! Dont believe me? Just watch! I show every front page headline of these 2 & you'll quickly remember it was a sopa opera that riveted the entire world !! PLUS I show a cool video of Kerrigan's silver medal winning short program, set to the music of the dance mix of St Etienne's "Pale Movie" !!! In the end Oksana Baiul took the Gold as the entire world watched!
* and Wrestling's Main Event's April 1994 issue is covered, a magazine I edited in the late 1980s, with STING on the cover !!!
Music News/Magazine deconstruction. The magazine of the month was RAYGUN issue #14 wioth Morrissey on the cover!! Hopefully youve seen RAYGUN, the predecessor to NYLON via publisher/editor Marvin Scott Jarrett, and RAYGUN was much more experimental and arty than NYLON has ever been. Youll LOVE the Morrissey layout in RAYGUN #14 I show, as well as a Pavement article too.
* VOX March 1994 from England with Brett Anderson from Suede on the cover ! And the Stone Roses.
* a sculpture of the Beatles circa Sgt Pepper !!
Fashion/Models: Some hot video of the Chanel spring/summer 1994 runway show, including super-duper models christy turlington, linda evangelista, nadja auermann & bridget hall, including swimwear, at the absolute apogee of their modelling careers & runway skills.
* "W" has long been my favourite magazine & early 1994 had some superb "W" covers, including Kate Moss & Linda Evangelista, all of which are shown on tonight's episode.
* Bridget Hall's Calvin Klein campaign. Town & Country March 1994 with Kelly Klein on the cover!!
The Banana Splits: Ive been a huge Banana Splits fan since I first saw them on Saturday morning TV in the late 1960s! And tonight's show features a couple of appearance from the Splits as well as their neighbours The Sour Grapes Bunch !! Check it!
ASTROLOGY: The NY Post's great astrologer the late Patric Walker is shown. In 2009 Sally Brompton, a protege of Walker, holds down the Posts's astrology, but I have yet to find another astrologer to match the much-missed wisdom & philosophy of the late great Patric Walker.
Animal Rights: "Beverly Hills 90210" had a great episode where Shannon Doherty & Tori Spelling joined PETA & campaigned for animal rights & against animal testing!!! See why "BH902" was still one of the best shows on TV in 1992. Admit it, you watched it every week just like I did !!!
Weather: Black & white weather maps from the New York Times. Colour weather maps from Long Island Newsday.

feb 15 2004. started out the night at justine & michael's MotherF***** party at Centrofly. It was 20 degrees. It was the 1 and only time I ever attended this infamous scuzz rock party. it was valentines & presidents day. I was comped the $25 admission by duke & jester at the door. it was really crowded & hot. ran into Jesse from salford lads/sadie/alps. we watched "!!!" [chik chik chik] who were pretty new, 1 45 out I think. around this time people were talking about "nyc punk/funk" with I guess rapture/DFA being leading names. !!! has returned to well-deserved obscurity. Listen I saw A CERTAIN RATIO on their 1st & 2nd LP tours, and this !!! shit was really embarassing. with some hives/strokes garage influence thrown in for added amateurishness. talked to jesse malin from DGen, he said Niagara is good on fridays. ron m was there on stilts, moco jumbi wha ? lool. it was hot & fun, like a tristate rock scuzz convention. spotlight on New Jerz lool. songs: shannon let the music play. stardust music feels better. cheap trick elle kiddies. pretenders precious! bowie hang on to yrself. hot hot heat. it was good while I was there til 2 am. ***1/2 of 5 stars. but I never went to another MFer. Centrofly's been closed for years. and JUust, Michael, Jonny & George all ended MFer a few years back under cloakede deep acrimony & antipathy. Justine I will always love you. Rawk n Roll !!
* next up to Sound Factory 46th st [now pacha] for junior vasquez' RED party. I was comped the $40 admission at the door by mark nelson - not bad for 141 years young, eh? ! Got there 230. junior played melodic house & classics, warming up. madonna deeper & deeper wild vocal mix. bango. 'take me higher' diana remix ? cool lights, fog, crowd was UP & wasted. U2 "Lemon" over dark progg beat was so cool. junior even whipped out some 200 bpm hardcore techno just to open our eyes a bit! stayed til 530. Im sure it went til noon. ***3/4 of 5 stars. Junior might be among the most famous house DJs & producers ever but he STILL never gets the props he deserves- when he is "ON" he can stand with the greatest DJs Ive ever heard live - and Ive heard pretty much every 'name' dj.
..
..
.. feb 19 2004. started off the night at pianos. djs incl montgomery- is he with 2 many djs? i dont think so. cool mashups: missy freak on/geoirge michael faith. 50 in de club/NIN closer! and funky cold medina. white light motorcade headlined, great hard set: open your eyes. semi precious. my way. all gone. love it. dream day. whats happening. come together. on top. great set *** of 5 stars.

feb 21 2004: my first visit to CROBAR west 28th st. later called studio mezmor. then mansion. now M2 ! King was at door. excellent renovation, looks a lot like miami crobar/cameo. huge dance floor w/2nd flr booths. mix of savvy ny clubbers & 201 guidos. but fun atmosphere. erick morillo headlined, subliminal winter sessions tour. he came out on fire, ibiza stompers, filtered house. euro disco. hi-lites coldplay god smiled. wackassMFer. midnight express chase. noah tepperberg came after marquee closed. stayed til 530. lots of energy & good erick set **** of 5 stars.

* the same night morningwood played Pianos, Chantal's birthday. 5 years later, still no LP #2 ... ??
feb 28 2004: started the night at don hills tiswas. aerovox played. sounded like byrds/pixies, not bad. whitelight motorcade headlined. set: semi precious. whats happening. my way. tom petty listen to her heart. *** for the bands. *1/2 for tiswas.

feb 15 2004. started out the night at justine & michael's MotherF***** party at Centrofly.
Junior might be among the most famous house DJs & producers ever but he STILL never gets the props he deserves- when he is "ON" he can stand with the greatest DJs Ive ever heard live - and Ive heard pretty much every 'name' dj.

february 1999: NYC NIGHTLIFE 10 YEARS AGO
Jan. 29, 1999 Sasha & Digweed headlined Twilo in their legendary monthly progresive trance residency. the only way to describe S&D's sets at Twilo circa 98-2000 is legendary - all the tiesto & armin van buuren sets in nyc in 2008 are a joke compared to S&D at their very VERY peak best.
sadly, sasha has gone all bleepy/ableton and diggers is like minimal tech now, but I understand some nights Digs still reminds us he is among the 10-15 best djs of this century.
* The Realistics headlined Arlene's Grocery. the realistics. remember when they had a Levi's ad in PAPER & were 'friends with the Strokes."? that's a pretty sad legacy.
Jan. 30, 1999 Tiswas at Don hill's featured bands Ultrafine, Thomas James, and The Every Other, recently known as The Everyothers- America's best rock & roll band circa 2000-2007. Feb. 4, 1999 BeavHer moved to Coney Island High for a few months. top tunes from Frank incl. 'funkytown,' ashes to ashes, burning down the house, & donna summer's 'bad girls.' the tunes & the crowds were pretty good at coney but beavher magic just doesnt translate outside don hill's imo. beavher was my fave party circa 1994-95. frank lives in LA now. its sad.
* also Fictura headlined Arlene's Grocery. mike lamorte was a brilliant songwriter with a midas touch. unfortunately neither fictura or grupo miguelito ever released a commercial CD. the 'nyc/strokes 2001-02 rock revolution' sure left a lot of fallen soldiers in the dust ...

* Pearl Harbour Tour supported by Bo Diddley & The Cramps
Also, Harley from the Stimulators was at the NY show but they didn't play. (Scratchy)
* A highly significant concert in the history of The Clash, particularly in terms of breaking the band in the USA. There was a buzz about the band in the US before the Pearl Harbour Tour but here at the Palladium were the key players in US rock journalism (not to mention the New York glitterati of De Niro, Andy Warhol, Springsteen ,Paul Simon). The band were fully aware this was the big one that could really break the band in the States, and they did not fail putting in a superb charged but professional performance.
* a night of nights - Strummer
Strummer remembers it now, still as one of the greatest and most significant Clash concerts, “a night of nights”. Joe had said, “Rock’n’roll changed the way I look at society” The Clash were attempting to make the US do the same. They had come to the USA, not to bury rock’n’roll but to reclaim and re-energise it.
They won important converts to their cause at this concert. Journalists previously sympathetic were now bowled over: the now legendary Lester Bangs declared it one of the best concerts he’d seen in his life; “They launched into I’m So Bored With The USA with a surge of energy that surpassed any band we’d ever seen and just built and built, leaving us all drained and ecstatic”. Tom Carson in Rolling Stone wrote, “The Clash unleashed one of the most staggering performances I’ve ever seen. It was music of heroic grandeur, epic sweep and visceral force; each song was faster and meaner than on record and had twice the impact”
* The equally influential Robert Christgau, wrote the Palladium crowd was on its feet before a single note was played and 2 hours later were still on their feet. Christgau eloquently described the visual and aural impact of The Clash; Mick and Paul leapt around as if no stage could hold them, Topper’s drums cracked through the music with the authority of machine gun fire, Mick’s ethereal, incantatory back up vocals filled the gaps in Joe’s harsh leads. “Strummer his eyes alight and staring as he snarled and screamed his message, looked like a man who’d just seen everything he loved destroyed, unsure whether to explode with rage or run for his life. His extraordinarily expressive face conveyed as much wit as passion.”
* "3000 of us waited for the Clash to take the stage. It was their first performance in America and many of us wondered whether these punkers from England could deliver the goods, many had their doubts. The lights came down. Beams of light started searching the stage, like prison spotlights. Suddenly a huge roar, a machinegun-like volley of raw guitars and drums. The Clash tear into 'I'm So Bored With The U.S.A.' The power and glory of rock and roll had never sounded so urgent and furious. Joe Strummer leaned into the mike like he was about to rip it from the stand with his teeth. His voice, a cry, a scream, a call to arms, a liberating burst of human anger and rock and roll voodoo. The Clash were the sound and fury of a new generation of rockers ready to riot and ride out on strings of steel and thundering drums. This was more than music, this was the human heart, the gut, the soul, electrified, amplified, bonafide!

BANANA Splits, JAIME King, SUEDE, St. ETIENNE: FEB. 1994 !!!
Body: feb. 11, 1994 juliana hatfield played the academy. that was a great medium size venue near times sq. its weird how juliana was an alternative darling in 1994 and 15 years later shes comp0letely obscure. last year she wrote a book about how her brush with fame made her severely depressed.
feb. 23, 1994 nick heyward was at irving plaza. [former leader of haircut 100]. I saw haircut 100 at the ritz in 1982. i saw heyward on his north of a miracle tour circa 1984. here's nick's 1994 setlist supporting his 45 'kite' & the LP 'from monday to sunday: caravan. january man. on a sunday. fantastic day. again & again in my heart. cant explain. ordinary people. kite. blue hat for a blue day. he doesnt love you like i do. dr robert. i got a feelin'. rain. [3 beatles covers!!]. love + 1. favourite shirts. sounds from the streets [jam cover]. whistle down the wind. of all the 'cult' artists, nick remains one of my favourites, he's produced a series of amazing english pop LPs & he is only remembered for 3 haircut 100 hits in 1982 & their woolly sweaters.
no fair
* nancy kerrigan's ice skating was a top story at the olympics.
1 of my favourite LPs in feb 1994 was the lemonheads its a shame about ray. suede's extraordinary 45 'stay together' was released 2/14/94. st etienne's 'pale movie' 45 came out the same week. and madder rose on tvt records.
my favourite tv show in feb 1994 was the banana splits reruns.
I heard there's a new splits series somewhere?
some of my business meetings in feb 94 incl mark kostabi, jed root, & company mgmt, whose models in feb 1994 incl jaime rishar, james king & beri smither. jamie king became an actress. jamie rishar was a super-model and as short as kate moss. and beri smither was a fab dutch model whose heroin addiction prevented her from becoming one of the top supermodels. her comeback was so brief it didnt really happen.

nyc nightlife in january 1999
january 2, 1999 tiswas at don hill's featured the mooney suzuki [john was still in the band, my fave mooney] & the damned personals live. it was a great night including these top choons: the jam's 'all around the world,' the charlatans' 'weirdo,' pulp's 'babies,' the animals' its my life, stone roses fools gold dance mix [nick what is that mix called? fools gold 1994? its not on the domestic remix cd]. and the pushkings' love takes flight. a decade on the manhattan Mod scene is dead, over. But in phila, SORTED at barbary each month is a rocking Brit night. rees-pecc !!!!
january 10, 1999 shout! at bar 13 featured 'what you see is what you get' and i cant turn you loose. shout! was a great soul/mod night each sunday in 1999 but steve & pedro split town for miami 5 years ago.
january 16, 1999 another great tiswas with thin lizard dawn. kitty in the tree cancelled. [whats up with the orion experience? his solo stuff is good.] nick's solid gold included the smiths' shoplifters, the stones' shes a rainbow, the roses' mersey paradise, and david jones' rebel rebel & jean genie. jenna joost attended I guess shes back in satchem LI 10 years on.
january 24, 1999 shout! featured brown sugar, monkey man, instant karma, and 2 from steveland morris, uptight everythings alright, and higher ground.
january 28, 1999 i saw the realistics at arlenes grocery. following this night, beavher moved to coney island high for a somewhat undistinguished run of a few months. the realistics claim to fame was a levi's ad in Paper magazine. so much for staten bands in the 21st century ...
january 30, 1999 tiswas featured one of the earliest performances of 'the every other' supporting ultrafine. the every others became one of nycs best bands circa 2003-2007 but now owen mccarthy is solo - he needs those guys & songs !! another fab gear night with young americans, byrds feel a while lot better, and animal nitrate.
* my favourite photo show in jan 1999 was wm eggleston 1966-1971 at cheim & read in chelsea. eggleston's 2008 whitney retrospective is superb - he's one of the best photographers ever.
