august 6, 2004 kerri black's Strike! party was at tribeca rock club with aerovox. HQ was at pianos. and junior vasquez was holding down his intiomate friday residency at discoteque, 1 of 2004's best weeklies- while it lasted!! JR's a cielo resident in 2009; and kerri moved to westchester & started a family.
august 7, 2004 the everyothers were at rothko. I hope you have picked up their 'pink sticky lies' EP on kill rock stars- or even better their debut LP- the EO were prob my favorite NY band of the 21st century.
august 12, 2004 beavher was still at don hill's every thursday with guests corinne, vito, greg, caroline, EB, curt, bob, & angelo. top tunes; B52's roam, burning down the house, J5 the love you save, emotional rescue, spinners' its a shame, & franz' take me out. stayed til 3:15. *** of 5 stars.

august 14, 2004 the strokes played randall's island with the raveonettes in support! 5 years later I think the raveonette's are giving us the better music of the 2 bands, including their new LP; and the Strokes are making mediocre studio LPs and insignificant solo work. well Albert is a nice guy, anyway...
august 19 2004 guided by voices and ambulance ltd played a great double bill on west 13th st & the hudson river . GBV stands as one of the best bands USA produced since in the last 20 years. ambulance havbe taken 6+ years for a 2nd LP; wassup ?!

august 27, 2004: sander kleinenberg played a great set at crobar with steve porter opening. hi-lites of sander's set: doors riders on the storm dance mix. blur song 2 hard house mix. made it til 5 am. ****1/4 of 5 stars one of sander's best crobar sets. sander plays pacha now but his sound got more techy and less melodic/percussive.
august 28, 2004 roger sanchez was at crobar. S-Man had nyc's best radio show imo 'release yourself' every friday latenight on WKTU 3-5 am. and his bi-monthly crobar residence gave us at least 3 of 2006's best NYC house sets. sanchez- total worldwide house superstar.

august 30, 2004 the republican convention came to town at madison sq garden & I LEFT town! as if nominating GW Bush for a 2nd term wasnt bad enough,. there were repeated incidents of police brutality & supression of protests/free speech. Vote Democratic in November 2006!!

august 6, 1999 germany's commander tom headlined twilo with a headbanging set of techno & hardhouse. it was teutonic & banging, too all night long I have a few of tom's import peacefrog techno cds around this time and thery are Diamond-hard, and worth $50-100 each.
august 7, 1999 body & soul, the legendary disco/R&B/house sunday party from vinyl in tribeca hosted its annual summerstage saturday open-air afternoon disco jam. even in the bright scorching sunlight, the sisters & brothers got down to the musical stylings of francois K, joe claussel, and danny krivit. all 3 djs played superbly with their garage and disco classics, a mega-mix of dan hartman's relight my fire [re-edit/12" version of course!] was the top tune but the whole day was splendid & upful. *** of 5 stars.
* the same night aimee mann was at tramps, make sure you pick up her 90s CDs whatever & Im with stupid - you wont find any singer-songwriter LPs better than those from the last decade or so.
august 11, 1999 Fuzzy from Boston headlined the mercury lounge with brilliantine & sleepyhead in support. of all the 90s USA alt-college-rock almost-was/obscure bands, Fuzzy might be my favourite- a Lemonheads spin-off band fronted by 2 gorgeous ladies & great songwriters. Their 'electric juices' on warners is one of the 90s great lost LPs. set at merc: glad again. dead end day. true colors. neil young. summers gone. gave into it. are you living. set my sights. rock song. flashlight. flies. and encore: best song, my request, a cover of the beach boys girl dont tell me. *** of 5 stars.

8/12 magic touch was a short-lived soul revival weekly at idlewild/white rabbit. and frank's beavher was over at don hill's the original 80s revival night.
8/13 factory fridays: UK garage at 222 lounge on 14th st. there's always been a uk speed garage element to my partying.....
& the legendary squeezebox was at don hill's with mistress formika + dj miss guy. To some people squeezebox is a movie. for some of us it was one of the best rock & roll parties in nyc of the last 30 years.

8/15 Duran Duran [only simon, nick + guitar warren cucurillo] played jones beach. gosh I saw D2 onn their first lp TOUR [in DC] up through Miami 2000 when they were on the comeback road.
8/18/99 lust for life at life with toilet boys, candyass & demon speed. after that ON! with nick marc's pop rocks & soul shots, 60s soul,, indie dance, hippie funk & britbeat.

august 4 1994 the USS Intrepid battleship on the west side pier at about 40th street was a popular party setting. it was cool to hang out on the giant top aircraft carrier deck of the boat, and sip summer cocktails as the hudson river breeze blew across the deck. inside the ship there was a dancing area but it was kind of claustrophobic & a bit briney/fishy smelling, but it had a cool subterranean/nautical vibe all the same. guests incl super model/victoria's secret pin up frederique van der wahl [at the time one of the most beautiful wonmen I had ever met], john flanagan, ex-owner of southampton's tavern, and dr janet linda guss. i wore the smiths strangeways tee, a button down ralph lauren peat-green pinstripe polo, and ripped/shredded levis. and YES it was a totally great party & no party Im aware of in summer 2009 has been nearly this good !!! An aircraft carrier for fuck's sake !
august 5,6, & 7: 1994 I visited my brother & his wife elizabeth on fire island & we went dancing at the Monster disco in the Pines!!
* AND the Video re-cap from my 1994 TV show "the Weather Report": the weekend of July 6 and 7, 1994 I visited my brother & his wife Elizabeth at their home on beautiful Fire Island. The weather was magnificent as you can see on my TV show "the Weather Report" as we sit on the beach by the water soaking up rays. The atmosphere in Fire Island was considerably looser, freer, & more active than Main Beach, more of a singles scene & lots of volleyball & hotty girls & boys in skimpy swimwear hooking it up. You could probably say that Fire island is the closest that NY state has to the anything-goes, body-beautiful beaches of Miami, thankfully Long Island is still a bit more subdued than the near-insanity/lawlessness that rules on South Beach, as some of us have experienced in recent years. As much as we can remember of South Beach, if you catch my drift.
My brother & I host a Weather Report segment on the beach, commenting on the 8/8/94 New York magazine, stories include Tom Snyder, & Kate Moss again! The NY Yankees in the NY Times, Howard Stern for Governor in Long Island Newsday [Howie is of course a Long Island native], Lisa Marie Presley's recent marriage to Michael Jackson [!!!], and James Dean in the NY Times Book Review. The weather & beach energy is spectacular on Fire Island, and along with the hotties playing volleyball & swimming in the blue Atlantic Ocean, my brother & I finish off the show with about 7 minutes of frisbee playing & I think youll agree the visual aesthetic/athletic contrast against the gorgeous blue water is pretty intense.
august 18 1994 I saw LUSH at the manhattan center, 7th floor ballroom i guess? obvs shoe-gazing and britpop was 1 of the hottest sounds at this time; LUSH's set incl 'for love' and 'sweetness & light.' miki & louise were a gorgeous pair of front-people but make no mistake, LUSH could rock out live with bouncy rhythms & sheets of feedback- the early 90s were a brilliant era for shoegaze bands like ride, mbv, spiritualized, and lush- and they definitely could play it all live. support from WEEZER! in one of their first nyc dates. and throneberry !!!! another GREAT night of music espec LUSH whom I enjoyed a few other times live around this era. Bet you wish YOU saw weezer in 94!
august 23 1994 I saw the film BARCELONA by whit stillman with janet at the carniegie hall theatre. is that theatre closed now?? Barcelona is an attractive, inoffensive personality setpiece, but Stillman's "Metropolitan" is far better- and an under-appreciated recolection of Manhattan's prep school scene circa 1975-1980.

winx was actually GREAT! fluid is a small/medium size place maybe 2/3 as big as shadow. great sound & air condition. josh plays there every last weds of each month, he lives in phila. In six months ive been in phila he played by far the most forward & future music of any dj Ive heard here. he started with some hard progressive that was cool. then he went into some tech house that got the crowd dancing. there were maybe 80-100 people there he said it was slow but i thought it was comfy & perfect. by midnight he was into peak tunes and he played hard techno! at least an hour and his crowd loved it screaming and cheering the hardest dancing. around one he played more housey but it was still closer to tech house. by 130-145 it was emptying out so i went over to him & took two pics !! Im actually excited to see these cos club people like u know that winx is actually really famous in our world. so a very cool phila party & his techno was awesome, very "now" at least as good as danny howells techno side maybe better. his mixing is fantastic his transitions are on the money 100% not 1 fuck-up all night

winx was actually GREAT! fluid is a small/medium size place maybe 2/3 as big as shadow. great sound & air condition. josh plays there every last weds of each month, he lives in phila. In six months ive been in phila he played by far the most forward & future music of any dj Ive heard here. he started with some hard progressive that was cool. then he went into some tech house that got the crowd dancing. there were maybe 80-100 people there he said it was slow but i thought it was comfy & perfect. by midnight he was into peak tunes and he played hard techno! at least an hour and his crowd loved it screaming and cheering the hardest dancing. around one he played more housey but it was still closer to tech house. by 130-145 it was emptying out so i went over to him & took two pics !! Im actually excited to see these cos club people like u know that winx is actually really famous in our world. so a very cool phila party & his techno was awesome, very "now" at least as good as danny howells techno side maybe better. his mixing is fantastic his transitions are on the money 100% not 1 fuck-up all night
guests incl dave P. best song 'everything in its place.' josh played techno progg & house, masterfully. stayed 11 - 2 am. ***1/4

He did play Atlantic City about a month ago. Oakey in AC? maybe that's a good match at this point.

* I also ran into vendela the stunning swedish supermodel as I was walking to main beach & she was riding her bike east from georgica on ocean ave.
* some other top spots summer 1999 on the east end of LI included conscience point with billy masterson hosting, flying point in southampton with danny A, jet east, and life at the tavern with the von broock twins. a decade later, every one of those club's names & promoters have changed: I would not go clubbing on nthe east enmd except in very rare cases.

july 17, 1999 the Cyber-Tek rave at Roseland, with an extra-ordinary techno set from sweden's cari liekebusch vs. adam beyer. I rated this rave ****3/4 of 5 stars. it was 1 of the best parties of 1999, 1 of the best raves I ever attended, and the liekebusch vs beyer techno set is also one of the best dj sets I heard in the 1990s. In fact a decade later, I will say that their dj set ranks in the top 5 techno sets Ive ever heard live, all the others would be carl cox sets.

july 31, 1999 the tvt/waxtrax mastermix tour with juan atkins, dj hurricane, expansion union, the crystal method & frontside at irving plaza. unfortunately the erratic but preternaturally takented majic juan didnt show for the date, but i rocked out to the method. great to see ben from tvt also in the house
august 1, 1999 my brother took me to see bruce springsteen at the meadowlands in e rutherford nj. it was a pretty good show with hi-lites 'back streets' [opening song!!] and encore 'born to run,' and jimmy cliff's trapped, and the ties that bind. but since i saw springsteen at the palladium in 1976 on born to run, and at the garden in 78 on darkness, 1980 on the river, and born in the usa at meadowlands in 1984, a 1999 springsteen show just aint the same, baby. ***3/4 stars. the 76 & 78 concerts are among the 10 or 20 greatest shows ive ever seen in 35 years of concert-going & seeing virtually every top rock band in that era.
setlist: back streets, ties that bind. 2 hearts. racing in the streeets. youngstown. ghost of tom joad. light of day. ramrod. 10th ave freeze out incl move on up , soul man & day tripper!!. thuunder road. born to run. bobbie jean,. if i shld fall behind. land of hope & dreams.

july 8 1994 i saw the lemonheads at roseland touring 'come on feel the lemonheads.' this is the lergendary night when courtney love came out at the encore and sang 2 hole songs playing guitar with evan dando on drums. kurt cobain had killed himself in april, this was courtney's first musical appearance since then & to say the crowd welcomed her with an intense outpouring of love & acceptance is a huge understatement. not to mention the subtext that couirtney's affair with evan dando led to her separation from kurt in early 1994, but that's all in the nirvana books you might want to read. hi-lites of lemonhead's set: shame about ray. ride with me. favourite t. down about it. my drug buddy. into your arms. great big no. big gay heart. confetti. rudderless. you cant take it with you. dawn cant decide. alisons starting to happen. its about time. style. frank mills. // courtney encores: Im miss world, doll parts. july 23 1994 juliana hatfield played central park summerstage with holland's bettie serveert opening. it was a rainy afternoon but by the time juliana came on the rain had abated & she was pretty popular at this point, some even called her the female pin up/object of affection in the usa alt-pop scene. I must confess I had a bit of a crush on her myself, and i chatted with her a bit backstage; however best julia chat i ever had was at mercury lounge i think when speed mcqueen was playing. her speaking voice is even cuter than her singing, its so breathy chirpy & alluring. hi-lites at summerstage incl my sister, no idols & the solo encore of 'nirvana,' once again her song about listening to kurt cobain, ["Ive got nirvana in my head/ Im so gald Im not dead/ here comes that song, I love it so much, makes me wanna fuuck shiit up"]. you may recall kurt's spectre hung heavily over the us rock scene in the spring & summer of 1994.

I'm wearing the Smiths "Shoplifters" tee shirt with Elvis on it. We are also joined by Mimi, a beautiful blonde who was one of our house-guests for the weekend. Topics discussed include the recently-opened Mercury Lounge, the Bowery's revival in the Daily News, & Bill Clinton on the cover of the NY Times Magazine. After the beach we drive on Ocean Avenue and then Main Street East Hampton, with Steely Dan's first LP playing on the stereo, and pass by the UA/Regal cinema, where Forrest Gump & The Mask are 2 very popular summer 1994 films. Ive met a LOT of actresses and chloe has always been one od the 'dead-est fish' in conversation.

favourite lps in june 1999 incl jim o'rourke 'eureka.' with a brill cover of bacharach's amazing 'something big.' o'rourke is now a member of sonic youth & christgau in the voice gave SY's latest LP a big rave in this week's edition. sure beats tricia romano's mr. black column...eek. 10 years on christgau & romano both are gone from the Voice & SY just made a good LP :)
